Spoilers Futurama Season 12 (9) July 29th

That was a fun anthology episode. But I still miss the what if machine.

Also I think that brief shot if the Big Bang at the end was reused from The Late Phillip J Fry

I haven't read any of the books they were parodying, but most of the humor was still general enough that I enjoyed it.

This was probably the best anthology episode yet! Sure, I might be a little biased because the host was fucking LeVar Burton!

But not only that, I loved how it spoofed all of my childhood favorites (but with sci-fi twists!)...although I was shocked to see Tintin of all series. Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and Encyclopedia Brown are all pretty mainstream (at least for someone of my age) but I wonder just how many people know Tintin (even taking into account the Spielberg film and 90s animated TV series adaptation).

The animated style for Tintin was spot on and I enjoyed most of the castings (particularly Zoidberg as Snowy, Mom as annoying Castifiore, and Bender, Zoidberg, and Kim as the unrelated Thompson twins), but aside from that, I was a bit disappointed how the story itself wasn't much like a typical Tintin adventure (globetrotting aside). Looking past that disappointment, it was still a blast watching Futurama taking on the iconic Belgian comic serial.

I probably enjoyed the first story the most because I'm the least attached to the source material (never read Nancy Drew although I did love the Hardy Boys as a teenager) and I loved how it kept calling out the unnecessary terms like tomboyish and portly to describe the sidekicks. I got a kick out of them getting their revenge by cutting the rope and fleeing the planet as it was sucked up by the black hole.

The Encyclopedia Brown story was also fun and I enjoyed how it mocked the two most common types of stories that series had (the garage detective agency and solving cases for dad), but I especially enjoyed their takes on Sally Kimball and Bugs Meaney and calling out those particular stereotypes, too.

Not trying to sound repetitive or anything, but I totally had the plot twist in the finale figured out.. The episode overall, meh. Some touching moments, Bender's duel with the Can Opener was hilarious, and there were many great one-liners ("it's like trying to remember a movie you slept through half of." "You've been Avatar'd!") But, not one of the show's better episodes, not even one of this season's better episodes.

I liked it, the callback to the last series finale was nice, and the stuff with Bender the can opener was pretty funny.

Only just had the chance to watch this week's episode because I didn't have Internet (and, for less time, power) due to Hurricane Helene.

While a lovely ending (yet again and probably not conclusive yet again*), it's probably one of my lesser favorite series finales (so weird to say but yet so perfect for Futurama). It wasn't quite as emotionally earned as the others, but at the same time, I don't mind that the plot twist was predictable (although I think that was part of the point).

That said, I loved all of the callbacks, self-referential references, and self-criticisms (the best being the gag about the movie season), although I was slightly disappointed that Sigourney Weaver didn't return to voice a different version of the ship's voice. But on the plus side, we got an unexpected b-plot involving Bender's greatest nemesis ending with a perfect Indiana Jones gag.

A solid series finale but "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings," "Meanwhile," and "All the Way Down" remain my favorites.

*Edit: I see now that the show has been renewed for two more broadcast seasons.

Bender mentioning Aquaman was funny considering DiMaggio voiced Aquaman in Brave and the Bold.
Ah, nice catch! I haven't watched that show so I wouldn't have noticed that. I wondered about that line.

This season has been a blast for me. Up there with the original Fox run. Really delighted after the somewhat uneven previous season. It really hit its stride once the writers got the “topical theme” episodes out of their system (the same thing happened when it was revived for CC).

I’m just sad they don’t seem to be releasing the episodes on dvd or Blu ray now. The old commentaries were great.

I used to love the Futurama commentaries, they usually had me in stitches as often as the episodes.

For me this latest season took a while to warm up. I really enjoyed Bendeer's hijinks with the can opener. :guffaw:

It was fun to see Fry and Leela remember the previous series finale. :D

Just read that this was the 6th most streamed series of 2024, just behind Fallout. Maybe this time they won't cancel it?
