Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

What is the "start date" for "postmodern" in this context? Because I think disrespecting teachers goes back to antiquity.
At least pranking teachers and bullying.

My personal favorite story is a teacher who had to be in a torso cast due to an injury in the summer. He was teaching in a school that was known for disrespectful behavior and some gang activity. During the first week he had the window open and his tie was fluttering in the breeze. So, he grabbed the stapler and stapled it down to his chest. He didn't have any issues with disrespect that year 😆

No, it isn't. "Not normal" doesn't mean it doesn't happen. My post was about societal norms, what different societies think is normal behavior.
Define normal here. Define respect. Based on what culture?
Yes there are. The rest of the paragraph.
So respect is universally defined and the whole world never experiences disrespect or had to earn it?

I can say as a science teacher in the UK disrespect is standard amongst teenagers.

However once they get in to 6th form which is post 16 it does taper off unless a teacher is really shit but at that point students will be picking their courses so won't be on courses they hate or not good at.

But generally a teacher has to earn respect of a class and even then it can vary from day to day with the mood of a individual student.

Starfleet is a little bit of science research
And a little bit of military
A little bit of Greenpeace and police
With a little bit of NASA in it's soul

I don't know if it's good or bad
But I know I love it so
It's a little bit of science research
It's a little bit of military

It's a little bit of hippie
It's a little bit of pirate
It's a little bit of of full grown Empire
It's a little bit of Brave New World

I don't know if the officers are happy or sad
But their adventures make them whole
It's a little bit of science research
A little bit of military

I wonder if the Doctor will be the Dean.
Title of a respected position, associated with a learning institution, and works as a name, too.

The Dean, you say?

Picardo's got the hair for the job, certainly.

She's both.

In an interview it was confirmed the Ship is also a part of the Academy, that's why it lands there in trailer.

That makes no sense to me. Why would the dean head off on these missions? What about all the students left on earth and all the Academy stuff happening off the ship. What about all the bureaucracy that comes with the job of being a Dean that conflicts with the day to day operations of commanding a ship. Trek IMO has gotten this right in the past with some of the Admirals that would come aboard the Enterprise. They would be in charge of the mission but Picard would remain in charge of the ship.

Because communication is faster in the future.

I'm assuming because before the Academy reopened at Starfleet Headquarters and given the nature of the Alpha Quadrant, post-burn cadets most likely had to get practical, real world experience as quickly as possible. This most likely meant that they had to be trained on starships or there was a dedicated starship that served as a mobile training facility. It's probable that this method worked well and they decided to keep it when the academy reopened on Earth. Which is why they havea Captain serving as both the chancellor and commanding officer.
