It's funny how WB 13 years was chasing that "One billion" box office recognition but now are content with $562.5M

Where's all the doom and gloom and quietly sacking James Gunn for underperforming?
Oh, all over YouTube, getting clicks and shares from Lex's Void Monkeys.

Warner's DCEU billion dollar movie was..... Aquaman.

And the next most successful was Wonder Woman, at over 800 million.

The formula for producing a successful Snyderverse film was not having Snyder write or direct. ;)

2013 - $670,145,518 for Man of Steel

WB- Quick! Get the guy who directed ARGO and400 ditch plans for "Man of Steel 2" We're going to rush our build up of the Justice League and cast Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg
The part WB never seemed to get is Marvel didnt sniff a billion until Avengers. The movies prior to that was always in a respectable 300 to 400 million range. The audience needed time to get to like the characters first before putting them in a team up movie.

Nolan has consistently made great films for the past twenty five years. He has also brought out great performances from actors. His one commercial flop was due to the pandemic, not the quality of the film.

Indeed. Oppenheimer and its extremely talented director brought audiences to theatres, not some unsubstantiated claim about not knowing when it was going to streaming.

My evidence?

Which does not support your:

quote) "...to all the kids (girls and moms)".

Your post was an absolute about demographic interest. Your link does not support your unfounded stab, which at its core was defending the shaky MCU--your clear as day motive.

Being unsure about streaming release is a big thing, if folks aren't 100% sure it will be on a streaming service in 1 month then they're more likely to go see it.

Once again, you are pulling much out of your ass, as you have not proven that was the reason for the massive success of Barbie or Oppenheimer. You are simply bitter because many recent era MCU films have underperformed or were historic flops at a time when nothing was keeping anyone from buying a movie ticket. Learn to accept the reality that the MCU has been on a downslide of late, hence Feige's Variety statement (and reference to his co-workers) about the perception of the MCU films, and his intent to try something different, because he knows there's much not working about the MCU right now.

Marvel fanatics will never own up to the fact that so many of their recent movies have been the sh@ts.

As consistently demonstrated by a few i'll leave nameless. When someone at the very top like Feige (and associates) at Marvel Studios make public statements about the studio's troubles with content (i.e, the movies), only someone mainlining Marvel smack would be psychologically incapable of admitting to the MCU well currently running dry of a once successful formula.

If the movie is good, it has legs and everyone goes to see it.

As in the case of Barbie and Oppenheimer.

If it sucks, the film dies. Period. Marvel's brand has been damaged from churning out too many mediocre or bad films and its going to take time to get that good will back.

Indeed.

I want to be Ken.

Sure he's a vapid moron with no penis, but those glistening abs on his frontside are a marvel.

The internet was invented just for posts of this kind. ;)

I too had a chuckle when WB announced their scaled back expectations of Superman (2025). MOS’s expectation of the studio was $750-800 million. Superman (2025), they’re good if it just makes $500 million worldwide. Obviously stated to control the narrative about the film’s performance. At this rate, it’s not going to catch MOS, The Batman (2022) or any of the three GOTG movies James Gunn wrote and directed.

MOS also demonstrated its profitability in all those annoying product placements. To the tune of $170 million. Often forgotten factoid, but not a small amount to ignore.

Man of Steel’s competition was a lot stiffer back in 2013.
Summer 2013 was supersaturated (no pun intended) with a lot of competitive action films.

Iron Man 3 - $1.2 billion - Top earner and first MCU film post Avengers 1.

Fast and Furious 6 - $788 million - When Paul Walker was still alive and before the films got REALLY dumb. Also the film that got Gal Gadot the audition for WW.

MOS - $670 million

World War Z - $540 million

Star Trek Into Darkness - $467 million - JJ's second Wrath of Khan redux.

The Wolverine - $414 million - Preamble for DOFP.

Superman (2025) had it relatively light on competition with other blockbusters. Jurassic World 4, F1, and Fantastic 4 First Steps.

Hopefully, WB is happy with the film’s performance and are honest about this “Super Family” film. With WB, we’ve seen this song and dance before when they tried a shared universe and wasted a Superman actor.

It is just a much different market now. It is tough to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Most definitely.

Man of Steel had to battle other blockbusters at the height of the CBM fad era. When the MCU was unstoppable.

Superman (2025) is battling CBM fatigue, as the genre is on it’s on the decline across the board at all studios. Fatigue is what stopped Superman and FF from reaching their full potential this summer.

I thought Superman (2025) would at least topple Jurassic World. Because those films have been beyond ridiculous the last 3 films. But no. Dinosaurs ruled the summer. I am happy that a lot of people saw F1. I love a movie about fast cars and ace drivers, that’s not Fast and Furious. Another ridiculous franchise that needs to end.

Just rewatched Man of Steel to see if it still holds up. It does to me. Don’t worry. I’m not planning to do a blow by blow comparison or argue it’s better than Superman.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed each film.
  2. I’m not at all attempting to persuade anyone who doesn’t like Man of Steel to change their mind.
  3. I think box office number arguments are pointless as the industry and society’s consumption, for lack of a better term, of movies has changed significantly enough between each film to render such comparisons obsolete (like comparing different sports eras).
In short, I like each film because they are successful at telling the story the directors wanted to tell. Also, I find each of the stories and approaches interesting in and of themselves. So while I’m fully aware some heavily favour one over the other, I don’t. If forced to choose, I slightly prefer Man of Steel because I find its premise a bit more compelling—but I’m talking a 51/49 split here. And I look forward to the next instalment by Gunn with great anticipation.

I’ll always wish Cavill had gotten at least one more kick at the can (solo movie) but I also hope Corenswet (sp?) gets a long run as well.

See? It is possible to like more than one of these two versions after all. 😉

How  dare you have a reasonable, mature view on both sides of the debate?!

Especially this debate?

And I say that as someone who is emphatically not a fan of Synder.
Well…I like variety. But I think we can all agree that Doctor Who really hit the skids with Tom Baker and never really recovered.

(j/k—Tom Baker was “my” Doctor and always will be)

Looking back, two things bug me about Man of Steel. The color palette and Pa Kent. Even with those two things, it is still an enjoyable experience.
