This episode I think has the first example of the video screens displaying the NX-01 in the ready room changing.

In the first ready room meeting, the render of the NX-01 is a shot of it facing to the right. In the scene where Una reprimanding Erica, it’s a a different render of the ship facing to the left

A solid 9/10. The horror aspects were fun, and I'm glad we got a follow-up to M'Benga's Klingon episode last season. I'm curious what will happen with Patel, but Erica's story interested me the most. It was sad to see her recent trauma has affected her so much, and I hope she's able to work through everything.

Let's not forget that TOS already featured the undead spirit of Jack the Ripper.

Star Trek has dabbled with horror tropes since Season One.
Indeed, yes. I'm no horror fan but I'm not blind to the simple fact that Trek plays with a lot of different story ideas inside its sandbox. "The Man Trap" is a classic vampire style trope, and somehow people enjoy that?

But zombies? No, no, no...that's an enemy too far. :vulcan:

I’m big time zombied out thanks to Walking Dead, The Last of Us, etc… but I liked this episode. A huge step up from Wedding Bell Blues. I’ll go 8/10.

lol…Ortegas got chewed out and disciplined worse for what she did then M’Benga did for murdering a dude. And then admitting he and Chapel lied about him murdering a dude.

And Una was wrong to play it so safe.

Her hair was weird in this episode too…looked like she was wearing a hat.

The zero-g stuff was fun and so was the rescue.

I read a fan theory on a different site that what’s happening to Batel will lead to the creation the TOS Gorn subspecies. That’s not half-bad despite being a bit wink, wink, nudge, nudge, small universe. But I could live with it if the execution is there.

Klingons have whips now? I can think of a few times Worf coulda used one. Also, gross bringing back an ugly Disco-Klingon design.

If Pike hasn’t told Batel what his fate is (and it does appear he hasn’t) that seems like a pretty big mistake. Like…really big.

Hi BBSers,

My family and I like to watch new Star Trek together, but I always check here first to make sure there isn't anything inappropriate for a 10YO (like heavy gore, or upsetting themes like child death- for calibration, the episodes we've skipped are 1.6 [child death], 1.9 [extreme fear] and 2.8 [distressing gore/themes]).

Could the good folks of the BBS please give me a (spoiler-free) heads up if there's anything too much for this ep- thanks!
If you skipped season 2 episode 8, you'll also want to skip this one as it's very much tied to that episode in many ways and there is a fair amount of Gore and violence; including a very visible bloody Klingon knife.

The last three aspects might be pushing it for a 10-year-old depending on his maturity level.

Ok... So when Marie was infected and the question was raised in comments "uh... Transporter buffer to buy time" some speculated that "well M'benga wasn't there and maybe only he knew how to do it,"

Ok... Now? Would seem like a pretty logical time to use something he already had used in sick bay with his daughter to let them actually get the flower or explore other options without her condition deteriorating
The thousandth instance of Star Trek ignoring either technology or a technical solution derived in a previous story because it would solve most, if not all of the problems and result in technological leaps that would make the show unrecognizable.

I mean...do all members of the same species use the same weapon? Since I use a gun, you have to use a gun? I just practiced escrima; would you like a bamboo stick?
Sure, if you cover shipping.

just found it odd that after all this time we now have Klingon whips.

Discovery season 2 implied or stated via Admiral Cornwall, Pike was a boy scout captain, the most 'godly'.
SNW reminds the audience he is just a man.

A man that's letting his friend get away with assasinating a klingon chancellor on his ship.

The more this show continues, the more Pike looks like a bad captain. This show isn’t doing him favors

Yeah. He seems indecisive and is more than willing to break serious rules like letting a friend basically get away with murder.

The good thing is this show is making TOS look greater than ever before. Kirk was a much better captain. His crew was much better. Unfortunately his crew is on SNW. Hopefully won't ruin their legacy too much. 23 episodes to go so there's a lot of things they can do to damage the TOS crew. Unfortunately M'Benga is too damaged already.

This show is definitely taking a downturn this season.

I am not a horror fan but it was not scary, I gave it a 9 for the character development, especially Ortegas.

As for Uhura's hairstyle, the character might be wearing a wig but that style is not strange to black woman using their natural hair.

Thankfully black women are past the need to seek approval for how nonblack persons and non black society, feel about how we style our hair.
(Society hates our melanin content and hates our hair texture...sucks to be us).
I thought the complaint about Una's hairstyle in this episode. Not Uhura's.

Solid outing.

1. It helps if you don't think of them as zombies, but more as mutants. I got a real Fallout New Vegas vibe here, especially when they were in the lab. I'm thinking of the vault where the people were turned into plant mutants. If you never played New Vegas the above reference is meaningless.

2. Pelia has never worked for me as a character on this show or as chief engineer, and it's too early for us to see Scotty, IMO, nor does 'young Scotty' really sell as a younger version of the resolute, tough Montgomery Scott from TOS. I REALLY miss Hemmer. His death lent some gravitas to the show, but he was far and away one of the best new characters.

3. The rehash of TOS characters is stealing from the rest of the cast. Uhura is the only 'optional' TOS character I'm sort of okay with, but La'an could have filled that role quite easily. I don't even think of M'Benga from SNW as the same character as the one from TOS.

4. If it was a no-fly zone, why does the Enterprise have to walk on eggshells for the Klingons? Una could have rolled in with righteous indignation as soon as the Klingons were detected, declared THEM in violation, and ordered them to leave. Flip the script on that for once!

5. Batel has grown on me as a character and she has an interesting arc. Looking forward to seeing how it resolves.

6. Is Starfleet ever going to send the Enterprise on a sanctioned mission, or do they just hang out wherever and decide on the next way they are going to violate orders and/or Federation protocols?

7. Una's hair was a flat-out abortion this episode, but it is almost impossible to make Rebecca Romjin look anything less than drop-dead gorgeous. Who knew the 'fat kid' from Stand by Me would get so lucky? Life can be strange.

Rant over. As I said last week, I just accept all these little irritations and continue to enjoy the show. Onward and upward!

I was getting Doris the Ugly Step Sister from Shrek

I only watched it halfway through when Paramount croaked on me. It was pretty good. I'll finish it this weekend. Btw, I noticed that bridge officer Una asked to do a scan or whatever -- looks South Asian -- and more importantly his name is Mr. Scannell?! LMAO.

I feel we have to include the caveat.

"I'm willing to condone murder to protect my friend...but the guy was a child murdering warlord."

I feel like leaving off that part affects things.

It's not DISCO where we just recruit the child murdering warlord to do our black ops.
I have no issue with M'Benga doing the deed per se and it would be unlikely that he would go to jail for using excessive force, albeit he admits he could have subdued him. My issue is with Pike saying, yeah, as your my friend, I can ignore your crimes.

The parallel was with Nazi war criminals being recruited by the USA and escaping prosecution but those that were captured were prosecuted, not lynched. M'Benga is still in the wrong.

I thought it was a solid episode. Didn't quite buy some of the zombie stuff though, just felt the direction could have been better in those scenes, it seemed like they were on the verge of being overwhelmed several times and then the next instant were somehow safe.

It was nice to see Babs Olusanmokun have a knife fight and not die ;)

I'm guessing what we saw in the mind meld is a harbinger of what is to come if they can save Batel.

Really liked seeing Number 1 in the centre seat, and the writers were obviously listening when fans complained that Ortegas never got enough to do, Navia has some great stuff to get her teeth into this year.

I liked that in terms of the plan both Number 1 and Ortegas were both right and wrong, there wasn't a perfect scenario, but it was good to see Una chew Ortegas out for her insubordination.
