SNW Season 5 In Development

The trouble with this is that SNW viewers already know that he ends up in the chair but not necessarily the other side of his fate. This means that fans are going to be told 'oh, it's not actually that bad for Pike in the end, here watch an episode of this other TV series to see what happens next'.

It's never stopped Marvel ("Watch Season Three, Episode Five of this TV series to learn the subtext of this line of dialogue from this movie." )

Boyce was CMO before M'Benga, he's long gone.

2261 happens in Season 3, based on the Federation Centennial signage.
I didn't know about the centennial flag. In that case, Leila Kalomi should be due to show up this season right? Apparently Kirk moves on pretty quick too with Janet Wallace after Carol ditches him this year, poor La'an. And Memory Alpha indicates Roger Korby disapears this time meaning that his arrival, engagement to Chapel, and disappearance ALL have to happen this season...

While that could be a satisfying ending, the problem becomes how to balance that against his current and ongoing relationship with Batel.

I'm ok with them doing Section 31 style one off movies (s) with Wesley , Peck etc set just prior to WNMHGB or after Turnabout Intruder .

My instincts tell me no series or movies will be done though. I don't think the new owners are interested and I think research will show Paul Wesley is just not super well received and is not lead material. Which the higher ups probably already know.

The fandoms opinion of Wesley seems to go up with every single appearance. His portrayal in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow was extremely well received. There is, as always, an extremely vocal minority of fans who simply won't accept anyone in the role but Shatner.

I'm not saying Paul Wesley is unpopular. I just don't think he's popular enough. The Shatner thing is part of it but I also do think he just doesn't have enough screen presence. He comes off as a supporting actor. A good supporting actor but a supporting actor nonetheless. He doesn'thave the gravitas you would expect in a lead ( My opinion) . I would still give him a "B" grade for his portrayal . But a foundational legacy character like Kirk warrants an A level performance. For me it's not about being fixated with Shatner at all.

Pike in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as Pike from 'The Cage.' Spock in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as Spock from TOS. Chapel in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as Chapel from TOS. M'Benga in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as M'Benga from TOS. Uhura in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as Uhura from TOS. T'Pring in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as T'Pring from TOS. Robert April in SNW doesn't seem at all like the same person as Robert April from TAS.

So why can't Kirk from SNW seem not at all like Kirk from TOS?

People change over time
Indeed. Pike I'm the Cage isn't himself. Dr. Boyce notes this and it takes Spock's enthusiasm over plants on Talos to start to crack his depressive mood. He complains about a woman on the bridge yet there's one seated at a bridge station.

And that's just Pike. I'm not expecting characters to me exactly like TOS and I'm appreciating the acknowledgement that despite what people think individuals do change over time.

I think the retcon that Rigel VII messes with people's minds and memories and that Pike was on this planet literally just before this episode is enough to handwave this in-universe.

I might even go so far as to say that the whole 1960s look of the Enterprise in 'The Cage' is because it's seen from crewmembers' perspectives who have recently been affected by Rigel VII (since Q&A shows there's really no time to have a refit back and forth).

Then just use IDW's explanation of a refit between Pike and Kirk and continuity is saved.

People change over time

Made-up people only change based on how the writers and producers change them. It’s not based in any kind of reality. Especially since the ‘over time’ in this instance is only a few years.

Also, Robert April doesn’t go from being white to being black in real life.

April's first appearance was in a cartoon from the 1970's.
Amazing that everyone is genetically the same and apparently had the same parents despite the shift in the Eugenics Wars from the 1990s to the 2030s (or whenever they take place now). Except for Robert April I guess.
