News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

He got humans so right in TOS but by the time TNG went into production he'd become a pretty eccentric and self-righteous (and inflexible) man who insisted that his vision of humanity was the only way to go. When a multi-breasted Deanna Troi isn't the dumbest thing 1980s Roddenberry came up with then you know it was a bad idea.
The early attempts at The Motion Picture are littered with "the full Gene," in all the worst ways one can imagine. In those later years, he really wasn't all that good of a solo writer; he needed co-writers and producers to keep him from going off the rails.

One more reason why I've never liked TNG.

They were just TOO perfect. I couldn't relate to any of them.

TNG is what made me a Trek fan and in the end a Sci Fi fan. To me TNG is something very unique. It's a show that works that shouldn't work because all of Roddenberry's mandates are kind of silly, like the no conflict stuff, for good drama. Yet it did work. Lots of credit IMO to Micheal Pillar. It's something that is almost impossible to recapture. STAR TREK:ORVILLE is the closest thing I have seen to a show recapturing the TNG spirit but even that show has more hip and cool character types. Stargate SGI also to a degree. I use to call Stargate a more grounded and realistic TNG.

TNG was my first Trek, as a kid, and i love it, but it really did have the most stiff characters of any of the Trek series. They were oh so morally perfect, and quoting Shakespeare, and attending poetry recital nights.

Every other Trek has more 'human' characters.

I liked all that stuff in TNG. To me it made it feel uplifting and I liked how everyone got a long and how problems were solved with speeches and people doing the right thing instead of just blowing stuff up or using guns. Not that I don't like that stuff. I mean I love shows like The Sopranos,Mad Men, etc but TNG to me was and still is, feel good escapism. Even today when I feel sad, I can feel better by watching TNG.

Seven of Nine is my favorite Star Trek character. :)

I loved seeing her on Voyager. It was a thrill seeing someone who thought and acted like ME on Star Trek. (She made mistakes. She didn't always have it together. She could be prickly. She was having to learn for the first time things that the rest of the crew took for granted.)

TNG was the last in a line of sci-fi introductions. Sadly, it's characters felt like elitist characters Kirk would argue with not people.

Kirk and Picard DID meet (Generations).

It's just more of Seth Macfarlane doing what he does best, which is copy people far more talented than he ever will be and claiming homage for what really is borderline plagiarism
With extremely poor humor, and thinly sketched main character.

The Orville has some strong points and good episodes but the humor, gags, and set up diminish it significantly.

Have you watched all three seasons yet? I think the last time we chatted about this, you had only seen the first few eps of season 1.

The dumb humor was foisted on Seth by Fox. He didn’t want to do that, but it was either that or they wouldn’t produce the show. That’s why when Hulu took over the humor was drastically reduced.

Got to Season 2 and Home was extremely difficult and not enjoyable and I decided I was done for now. It isn't one thing but a cumulative effect of small things.
