What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

So like. I mean like just like really like.

I wonder how Starfleet makes the distinction. "Look, you nerds on Psi 2500. You only kind have to follow orders, chain of command, that kind of thing. It's not like you're on the Lexington. Those folks have to be buttoned DOWN."

Then when Captain Kirk shows up with Klingons AND Romulans hot on his tail and needs the help of actual Starfleet they're all "We don't have to listen to YOU Mister Man!"
a few months ago i listened to a "filk" song that did a terrible number on Kirk's character as a person and a commander (made him out to be a tyrannical martinet sort of thing, but serious) and the crew went on strike, mutinied, and started roving space in the Enterprise...

Ah, yes, mutiny on the USS ENTERPRISE.

So much so, that StarFleet gives him Captaincy of the FlagShip of the Federation for over a decade once you count the Enterprise-D to Enterprise-E.
do merchant marine or research fleets have a flagship, the lead ship where an admiral is expected to be on board commanding groups of other ships during a large scale military operation?

Are you going to change your feelings on the subject matter?

I'm not denying you, in fact I agree that StarFleet is a Military when it needs to be one.

But it's also a Hybrid Service that is beyond what a traditional Military does.
so it's a military that does other stuff... like a modern military. or even traditional militaries. who was doing most of the cartography and stuff, maybe stopping off at an island to sketch the funny-looking animals and take plant samples, or talking to the natives. but then, the klingon- i mean french flag shows on the horizon! time to drop the other stuff.

At that moment in time, yes. When you are fighting wars, you are performing the duties of a traditional Military.

But you are correct, in a way. "StarFleet is the Military" when the UFP calls upon it to enforce it's will or to fight.
But when they are not doing those types of actions, they are not in the "Military Mind Set" at that moment in time, they are free to perform their duties as needed.
Exploration, Scientific R&D, Anthropology, XenoBiology, etc.

It's a bit more complicated than "We are the Space Military" all the time.
There's a Mixture of Academia & Research Institute into StarFleet, along with Exploratory Duties, and a whole host of other responsibilities.

It's not so simple as to what a traditional "Military Operations other than War" do.

e.g. StarFleet has "Duck Blinds" where they keep their StarFleet Anthropology teams in to observe the locals and do anthroplogical research on the natives of whatever target planet they're investigating and the people that are on said planet.

While there are Civilians who are telling the army that they need Anthropologists. Despite the fact that the Anthropologists are not happy to help the US military during it's occupation in Afghanistan.

But in StarFleet, it kind of does to a degree.

That's why I don't call them a traditional military service and more of a Hybrid service.

Aspects of Academia, Research Institutes, and all sorts of other entities & services are all integrated into StarFleet.

Aspects that modern Military aren't willing to do or tasked to do.
The Royal navy and US navy literally has dedicated science vessels.

Both the USA and UK military have dedicated laboratory facilities and research facilities.
