The Least Disliked Episode 2025 - TNG Final Rounds

Removing "Conspiracy" which is the one for which I've been voting in the recent rounds.

My vote in this round goes to "The Drumhead".

I find it hard to finger what I don't like about this episode. I think it is that, despite JLP's impassioned and moral speech, too many of the attitudes of the Federation and Starfleet as a whole (never mind individuals) aren't in line with the supposed ethics and morality of the future. I don't want a future like the present.

The Drumhead is a story anyone can tell, just swap Trek names with any found on that map sitting on the table and voila. It's not a bad story, but it's almost as much an "after school special" as Symbiosis was. But guess which one of these two stories incorporated more real science into the sci-fi?

(On edit: Well, swap "warp core" as well, but it's one of the easiest sci-fi stories to be able to so quickly rewrite to show how generic it is.)

I'll go with Power Play this time.

A difficult decision with these top tier episodes.

"Chain of Command" makes an important case...but it makes our dear crew look like jerks in the process. Riker comes across as especially petulant.

The brilliant strategist whose strategic brilliance is an informed ability doesn’t work for me. And the Ferengi never work in TNG.

I gotta vote for "The Pegasus" for giving us another evil admiral.

You all reminded me how much I dislike Riker's behavior in Chain of Command, so Chain of Command it is this round.

We are getting into a tough situation now. I WANTED to add a point to Chain of Command... not for the episode itself, but for some reactions to it. If Part 1 was still there, I would have given the point here. I absolute despise the attitude of "Jellico was a good captain!", no. He wasn't. He was an absolutely terrible leader for the context he was in. He may have been a good modern-day US Navy officer, but Jellico is not an officer of the modern-day US Navy. His rigid, unwavering style simply didn't work and almost damned the whole mission.

BUT...

I chose "The Drumhead". Great episode. It hurt me to do it. It's point is earned due to ideology. I don't want Starfleet or The Federation to be like that. We're supposed to be better than that.
