The Most Disliked Episode of TNG, Finals - 2025 Edition...

"We'll Always Have Paris" is the only TNG ep I feel like I legit do not know. I haven't been able to make it through it at any point in the last two decades. I have tried many times, and I always fall asleep within 15 minutes, even if I start it wide awake. That episode is just like a sleeping pill to me, I don't know what it is.
~ This is one of two or three early episodes of TNG that I've watched recently (for the first time since they were first broadcast), so I've only just noticed how the pacing differs from later seasons, and especially modern shows. There really do seem to be large swathes of the 45 min run time in which nothing much is happening: overly long pauses or reaction shots (not that anyone really seems to react to anything), and rather dull 'action' scenes. Tied in with the weird/unexplained "science stuff" which goes nowhere, I totally understand the soporific effect it has on you.

Apart from the triple-your-Data scene at the end, where he comes across more as a non-psycho Lore anyhow, the episode is a snoozefest.
~ Yes, the three Datas scene was bizarre. Well, the Datas reactions were bizarre, I should say. I think middle Data's "It's me!" might even wake @Sakonna up ;)

Anyway, another vote for "Suddenly Human". Although I didn't particularly like it, I "got into" SH - I was engaged by it. And I much preferred how it handled its ending to the similar "Cardassians" (DS9).
"Bloodlines" can do one. I found it preposterous and cringey - and very annoying.

"Suddenly Human" - 3
"Bloodlines" - 1

let's see, what's worse... a low-rent second-rate twist on TBOBW, or a needless sequel to "The Battle" in a feeble attempt to one-up it but making the season 1 story, which was solid already, an all-time classic by comparison. You'd think trying to build on a decent story would otherwise be an easy win, right? Not in this case, as even the second-rate copy of TBOBW had more atmosphere and got the unnerving tone of an alien civilization right. Sheesh, I'm having to defend that story...

In short, Suddenly Salad is saved.

"Suddenly Human" - 4

WINNER:
"Bloodlines"

On edit due to the power of optimistic concurrency:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, NINJA'D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANTED TO SAVE IT FIRST!!!!!!!!!! :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Thwip!

This merely demonstrates (in a quasi-karmic way) that this outcome was preordained.

That said - and I may have said so before in previous editions of this contest - this result shows that the contest is misnamed. Clearly "Bloodlines" is not the "most disliked" (= "hated") episode of anything! What it is is an episode that no one remembers, that is mediocre and forgettable, and which therefore has no fans. So it should really be "the least inspiring episode of TNG" - and that it may very well be all things considered.

So more on this colostomic episode, Damon Bok returns and presents a kid that was apparently made thanks to Picard's wild oats and horsing around. Gee, why not get even smaller universe syndrome and claim the kid's mom was the lady from "Tapestry" and really watch Kirk² - I mean Picard - squirm? The storyline was overly convoluted to begin with, to the point you could get seven seasons of shtick from this plot alone if you handed the ideas over to Maury, Jerry, Ricki, Richard Bey, you name it, the 90s were loaded with over the top talk shows and/or brawlfests of which some were no less contrived but audiences yummed it up anyway...

It's sad when an otherwise mediocre and forgettable story also doubles as the worst one of the bunch. And yet, "Bloodlines" is so bereft of its execution, imagination and passion* that it is just as worthy of being crappier than a lot of season 1 escapades, of which some were largely banal as well but at least those had a spark of life or potential to them despite tripping over themselves - and none of those felt anything as contrived. This eppy simply doesn't have anything going for it because it was all story-by-numbers at this point and that's a fair reason to dislike it, TNG was on fumes at this point**. Why not give this one to DS9 for Quark's or Odo's kid or something to build up new characters instead, and let TNG have "Move Along Home" where the crew beam down to a planet and get trapped in a deadly game, just to teach Data about humanity where the more established characters make it work better***. Yep, I just made you think of Riker and Worf singing Allamaraine****, didn't I?

* that sounds oddly familiar... :shifty: double entendre aside...
** In season 7, a season that's trying to be more sci-fi-themed again when compared to the previous two more generic when not traipsing into soap-opera affairs, with some successes, too often feels less than the sum of its parts, which is amazing as the incidental music has been flat and lifeless for the better part of three years at this point, all while despite also finding a new vibe for incidental music for some episodes of which still can't compete with season 1-4 but is better than most the remaining three seasons' worth.
*** in all fairness, the story does boost Quark immensely as a result and adds long-needed dimension to the Ferengi and is in fact an underrated story, but before I digress...
**** and count to four!:

(On edit: Is the gold emblem on the door somewhat reminiscent of the Blue Peter logo? Not surprising as the makers seemed cognizant of other British shows, especially sci-fi, hehehehe!)

Actually, no. It takes 4 votes to eliminate an episode in the Finals. There have been times when it's down to 3 or 4 episodes and one is at three votes but it still doesn't get taken out because another got 4 votes first.

Anything can, and does, happen in these games! It's part of the fun!
I think I had gotten confused and was talking about Up The Long Ladder? So sorry for the confusion lol I don't remember what I meant

Oh my god, how did you know? That is exactly what has happened!

I usually nod off somewhere around that first visit to Holodeck Paris. I'm thinking how much I enjoy the cheesy season 1 production values... it's so soothing... I start to fade...

And the next thing I know I'm jolted awake by three Data's yelling at each other.

Then I turn the TV off and stagger to bed, wondering how that Parisian love story somehow led to three Data's.

And I think I've had that exact viewing experience THREE times over the last decade or so. Am I also in a time loop?!?!?

^^ Troi's line is good for the younger audiences who haven't had to deal with that sort of fun yet... plus, the edit makes for a very different episode, but let's face it: It sounds like few would complain.

^^ fencing isn't that bad... but note how 24th century masks have that refractive 80s grooviness to them... also, if Guinan was on board, she'd have felt the temporal disturbance too.

^^ music aside, this scene is the least effective and makes the least amount of sense. Sure looks cool, though. Also of note, that channel that puts out the best moments compilations features... only that scene as evidence, which is sadly telling when the turbolift scene was arguably better...

^^ one of the few fun scenes of the episodes.
