News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

What about that pilot guy from Enterprise. Trevor Masonflower or something like that? I don't think they ever game him any lines from what I recall.
I was going to mention Mayweather and Hoshi, but then I remembered that they were main cast, so they don't count. Enterprise main characters not getting enough to do is a similar but different problem to Discovery side characters not getting enough to do. For one thing people can't use the "But they're not lead characters!" argument to try to defend how weird it was.

Travis was doubly egregious since they built him up so vocally with the "Space Boomer" reputation and when the NX-01 launched he was the most experienced member of Enterprise's crew, at least the human members. But that reputation as the human with the most deep space experience quickly went unused and save for episodes like "Fortunate Son" and "Horizon" the whole concept of Travis as the kid who had more street smarts than his senior officers went to waste.

Maybe they were afraid of creating another Wesley Crusher? :shifty:

Travis wasn't even a kid. He was established in Season 1 as being 25 years old, several years older than Harry was in Season 1 of VOY. They just didn't want to use Anthony Montgomery, pure and simple, and left him as largely a glorified extra. Travis got screwed over and Hoshi didn't fare that much better.

I don't sense that Uhura is overused, although she has slightly fallen into the "super genius" trope, because apparently it's not enough simply for a character to be a competent technician and proficient officer.

It's partly that. Uhura just seems to be involved in... everything that happens on the ship. I also don't really know why Uhura has to be a Super Special Super Genius as well... I think characters really stop being an inspiration or representative when it's clear you are NOT like them. I'm a straight dude so take my opinion her as you will, but it bothers me that they took a character like Uhura... who is someone that all women of color could look at it and say "that's me!", and turned her into a super genius character who now has really nothing in common with them aside from sharing a skin tone.

My main issue with SNW S2 is why we needed to bring in Kirk when we've already got a fine ensemble. Unless the plan is ultimately to handover.

Yeah there are enough good characters that we really don't need Kirk. Once was enough. Sure have him show up, "oh cool, it's Kirk", and then we're good.

Although even more than that, my issue with SNW S2 is more the somewhat overreliance on the humor episodes. In a 10 episode season, you've got three that leaned on humor... maybe closer to 3 and a half because I think alot of "Tommorowx3" relies on the "hurr hurr they're in TODAY!" humor.

I'm ok with humor episodes. It's actually on the other end an issue I had with Discovery... Discovery was always too superseriousgrimdark all the time. It's ok to have fun every now and then. But... SNW S2 probably should have picked ONE of those, and it absolutely should have been "Those Old Scientists".

If it was a 22 episode season... ok, do a couple goofy fun episodes.

Yeah ENT missed the mark on some characters, but Travis and Hoshi still got more to do than... those... guys on DSC.

It did? Which novel?
Desperate Hours by David Mack.
Though it's weird that they think anyone who speaks must have more focus on them (that's not how contracts or stories work) and that even Ensign McKnight needed an episode fleshing her out.
The truly odd thing is the same people who complain about Disco's bridge crew never getting story material are the same ones who praise Picard S3 for how it handled the Titan's bridge crew, even though they had even less to do than Disco's bridge officers.

But then again, fandom has a well known double standard when Lord Terry is involved.

Don't get me started on how the PIC S1 cast was tossed over the side for the TNG reunion. :scream:

Another thing that the show never did that I never realized until a recent D-Con Chamber episode - Travis never had a scene in the decon chamber. Everyone else in the cast got their moment in there.

That guy! I loved that he went on to play Mudd on "Discovery" and I think he was in some office comedy or something as well. "Park and Recreations" or something like that.
You're thinking of Rainn Wilson who was also on The Office. The helmsman from Galaxy Quest also starred with Scott Bakula on NCIS New Orleans.
