Spoilers The Strange New Worlds Starship Thread™

I've always wondered if there was a crossed-wire and the writer was thinking of the Archer-class scout from the novels, which is only a bit bigger than a Runabout and would make more sense with a crew of three, and the production designer was only familiar with the FJ idea of a TOS-era "scout" and just downscaled it as much as humanly possible to explain the small crew.

How big is the Archer? Assuming one deck thick it's pretty small by general Starship standards, but it's still large enough that a crew of just three officers would be rattling around in there.
If you look at the concept art I posted, you can see someone standing in the windows. Gives a pretty good idea of the scale of the ship.

The only thing I don’t like about the Archer is the absolutely unnecessary gap in the nacelle pylon. It’s like somebody wanted to emulate the Cerritos (whose gaps also don’t make much sense.)
My other issue is that there should be a integral StarDrive section that is right behind the Saucer, where the Warp Core / Impulse Engines should live, and the Warp Nacelle Pylon should slant forward.
Also, the Warp Naclle Warp Field Grilles should be facing sideways instead of Vertically.
Move the Deflector Dish unit into it's own pod, mount it on the opposite side of the Single Warp Nacelle on the Dorsal Section with it's own pylon.
Let it have a matching Aft facing Deflector Dish as well to allow long range comms & aft facing sensors / Deflectors).

You never know when you might need to warp in reverse.

I kinda like it. Makes it feel like a (Light Starship)

So you want it to be an entirely different ship?

25% different ^_-.

The Saucer is Identical, the rest of the components gets moved around.
Being that the episode was about first contact with a new species, combined with Pike watching The Day The Earth Stood Still, I'm pretty sure the intention behind the Archer was to make it look as much like a "sci-fi flying saucer" as possible, while still being easily identified as a Federation Starship.

Going by the concept art, it's one deck. I'm pretty sure they meant for it to be the Archer-class from the Vanguard novels size-wise, but whoever did the CG model went with the Saladin-class as design inspiration.

But that's just my guess.

Yes, I assume the script just said “scout ship” or similar, and the designer went for the FJ scout inspiration. I like it.

No, they wanted tp make sure it was different enough from the Franz Joseph single nacelle Federation Scout and Destroyer designs in the STAR TREK Technical Manual - which Paramount gave Franz Joseph full copyright over meaning IF they used one of the design verbatim, they'd have to pay his Estate royalties, or face a possible lawsuit.
