Carol Kane........

Star Trek has a long list of quirky alien characters. They tend to be my least favorites of any of the shows, but there are exceptions.

TOS didn't have one (Spock doesn't quality)
TNG actually didn't either.
DS9 had some. Like Rom, who took a long time for me to get into. Nog was just too over the damned top. Odo was a curmudgeon and easily my favorite. Quark wasn't quirky, in fact he remains the best damned Ferengi in the franchise. DS9 did aliens better than humans. Garak was just amazing.
VOY: Christ, Neelix. I love Ethan Phillips, such an incredibly sweet person. His character was grating.
ENT: Phlox. He was the best kind of quirky. He was weird. Winner.
DIS: Ummm....I guess Saru. I dropped out at season 4, so IDK. He and Stamets were the only characters I liked.
SNW: Pelia. Nope. With a crew of wiseasses, you don't need a quirky Engineer to make it even less serious.
LD: from the 5 minutes I saw of this beast, they're all quirky, so nope
PROD: 30 seconds in and realized I aged out of this franchise. :rommie: So I have no idea.

I like her character.

Yeah, me too. Pelia is cool, I got no beef with her. Not even her funny accent.

I do have issues with there being a singular "Lanthanite accent" though. Surely Lanthanites have a diversity of accents, just like humans do?

Oh well. No biggie. I hope she has a big role in S3 and further.

That said, I admit I'm curious: Are Lanthanites immortal? Pelia is thousands of years old, but will she ever die? Did she have any issues attending Starfleet Academy, when she surely looked the same as she does now? (meaning, did she have any problems with fellow cadets because she looked so much older than them?)I hope SNW touches on this.

They may keep Pelia or have a series of “placeholders “ until the show ends.

I would freaking LOVE an appearance by Moves-With-Burning-Grace.

Huh? They have one wiseass, Ortegas. Some of the others might quip now and then. La’An is definitely not.
Now now, you know how this works. If someone is not stiff and formal with a stick shoved up their ass, they're a wiseass.

She might not have attended the Academy, not everyone does. Hell, given Pelia's age, she might have joined Starfleet before the Academy was even established. Una did say to Pelia "you've been in Starfleet since before I was born."

It’s Starfleet. Have you seen some the low ranking middle aged men who serve on its ships? Age is not an issue. Pass the test you’re in . 18, 28, 48 or 8000.

Alcoholism
Short tempers
Married w/children
Good old boyism
Arrogance

All quirks
No...

Quirky: characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits.

Alcoholism - sadly not peculiar or unexpected in humans
Short tempers - pretty much a normal human thing
Married w/children - doesn't even belong in the conversation
Good old boyism - nah
Arrogance - pretty much a normal human thing

Carol Kane is the epitome of quirky. Quirks stand out because they are not average or expected. She's like this in pretty much everything, it why they hire her and why she was the perfect pair with Andy Kaufman in Taxi - he was quirky. All the stuff you mentioned can be found in pretty much anyone on the street. It wouldn't even be strange to be all in one person.

If you have one character routinely speaking and acting in a certain why that other characters find strange, off putting or just amusing, that person is quirky.

All those are jokes. Playing up some of the negative traits of various engineers in franchise. Except for “married w/children” . I was hard pressed to find on for Miles. And Don’t care for the “Keiko is a shrew” line of thinking. So I didn’t go there

Character quirks are what writers use to set characters apart. Some are physical, some are from personality and some come out it dialog. Chekov’s Russophilia for example. Phlox’s chipper attitude. Even Geordi’s VISOR, I think counts.

Hammer is the arrogant one, and he’s not human ;)

I like her very much, but I do worry she won’t be returning. I think the focus will be on Scott as engineer from this point.

I love Scotty but prefer another engineer here. It get's boring to use the same characters again and again.
I also think James Kirk wasn't neccessary for the show, his brother Georg Samuel is an enrichment though.
Form Pike, Uhura and Chapel we haven't seen much in previous series, so it's good we learn more.
Spock...well considering how long he lives it's ok to show more of him...even when SNW would work without him, too.
Generally I love SNW.
Sorry if I got a bit off topic ;)
