He had his mind messed with by an alien probe.
Dude was treated poorly and as a social outcast long before that.
Okay, and how does that negate Starfleet Academy's psychological testing?
It clearly isn't foolproof given how often we see problems occur. One would hope frequent assessments would occur as people move up in rank.

I feel like most people think Shaw is a terrible character in the same way people thought Jellico was terrible.
No.

Shaw was a terrible human being. He almost left a young man to die for the most selfish of reasons.

Shaw exercised his power over a subordinate to degrade and insult.

Shaw interrupted a personal moment in the Holodeck to vent at characters who mostly dealt with a phase of their psychological issues, while he himself was in desperate need of psychological rest leave.

As written, he was an asshole, but not in a fun way, in a scummy way.

Please don't begin to compare him to Jellico or Rayner, they're not the same.

Shaw was a dick. People enjoyed the character because the actor did such an entertaining job, but I agree, he was not a nice character and I’m shocked he advanced through the ranks to become a Starfleet captain. He didn’t exactly embody the values of Starfleet. One of the many problems I had with PS3.

"Rough around the edges" or "dick" are euphemisms to disguise exactly how bad he is.

The only reason I can excuse his presence at all is because he's damaged, but he convinced Starfleet to give him a ship...more assholery. Counselor, oh counselor!? Nothing. Silence. Starfleet failed Shaw, Shaw failed everybody else.

Discovery's crew act way more like TNG's crew in general than most of them actually acted in season 3.

Yeah, by 2375 Starfleet had been decimated. Combine the bloodiest war in the recorded history of the Alpha Quadrant with no fewer than two major Borg attacks on the heart of the Federation itself and all those ships and lives that were lost and it's a wonder the cook from the Titan-A wasn't the Captain.

Yeah, I don't get why they wrote him like that if he was supposed to be 'redeemed''. It's not even that he was right, like Jellico. He was just an asshole.

That's all it really should be.
It's good enough to keep me watching. But I'll never rewatch it. I'm fine with C-level shows as one time viewings, but I always hope for something more. I realize DIS is more for some people, and I'm happy for them.

I still like Season 5 more than 1 and 2, so it's doing a more than serviceable job.
It's fascinating with DIS how the seasons are so different and everyone seems to have their own ranking. Sure, that's true with other shows too. But it seems even more so with DIS.

I'm the opposite of you in that S1 and S2 were the best for me with S2 being peak DIS. Although, I didn't care for the Klingon redesign. But it was downhill from there. S5 is a bit better than 3 & 4 in my book. But each to their own!

Main cast this season is pretty clearly Michael, Rayner, and Book, with Culber close behind. Plus the baddies.
I'm not sure that Culber is much ahead of Stamets though. Sure, he had the Trill story in which he was fantastic. So, maybe a little bit but perhaps Stamets will feature in one of the final two? So far Stamets seems (from memory) to be consistently doing more than Culber episode to episode, but not have the single standout one yet. Kind of a wash.

The biggest problem is the clues don't tend to be interesting. It's hard to make a mystery interesting when the puzzle pieces are bland. They should be things that are interesting in themselves. A robot here, a alien transporter their. a book here.
Or maybe even make one of the pieces an entire planet, like in DW!

All Michael had to do was introspect really hard.
Right. At first she wasn't doing it hard enough. And then lights started going out and that gave her more motivation to introspect harder! Whew!

Loved the end bit where Moll took over the Breen. It's aspirational how in Star Trek, anyone can take over an alien space empire.
Sarcasm doesn't usually carry that well over text but I heard it loud and clear here! :techman:

It was quite a new thing when one of the background people was in command this time :D

Didn't Burnham face her inner self a few times before? Like in Unification 3

"Perfectly balanced" is a good description for this episode.
At first, I thought you were correct about perfect balance in that everything was equally boring. But, no, you're incorrect, Book and "Book" were standouts in this episode, messing up the balance.

I still think they might use the power but I don't know anyone worthy of really keeping it. This crew with all they've been through might be the most worthy out there but, still way too much temptation.
I do actually agree with this thought and it's a bit of a criticism of the clues and test, the whole process of the scientists who hid them. The tests tend to be for Burnham and, to a small extent, the crew of DIS. So, even though Burnham passes the tests --ok, she's introspective after enough pressure-- so lets stipulate that she and, what the heck, the entire DIS crew are worthy of the progenitor tech.

What about the entire freaking Federation for however long they hold the tech?! Someone, somewhere, probably multiple someones, will be tempted to abuse it. There's really no way to test an entire civilization, Federation or other, in its entirety and for all time. Just not possible.

I assume that in the end the tech will be hidden again or destroyed.

I barely have time for one.

Decent episode for me, gave it a 7.
Though that last bit just killed the breen as anything other than single note bad guy.

I would love to see a meme where when Burnham enters the mindscape.
Burnham appears high on a golden throne with a glowing robe, surrounded by white light, and angelic music.
AI Book: I heard you had an ego, but DAMN!!!!
