What an interesting way to open the episode--with Disco Lights! For an episode that dealt with few special effects and kept the action countryside or on the ship, it had to be one of the best directed outings I've seen. The brief scene in the white room with Kovich and his yellow lined paper left me wanting more... maybe he'll be featured in the Section 31 movie? Culber's journey with his holographic grandmother was interesting, but ultimately led nowhere after a promising know the body first, then the soul approach. The Adira character is well acted IMO, and it'd be nice to see them in the new Academy show, maybe. I also don't buy the Tilly marathon scene, but can suspend disbelief within the framework of a fictional episode--didn't bother me so much except for the logical improbability. Burnham channeled her inner Kirk in breaking the prime directive, and I'm hoping the ramifications of that will be addressed. I kind of liked that they left the God(s) question an open one, with technology being the answer to only that particular problem. Finally, the rote story overall was nicely punctuated by the rain scene at the end, again, the direction was really the best part of the entire episode to me (along with the understated but effective score), so it squeaks into 9 territory for me.

Not everything needs to be shown on screen for it to have happened.

We know people in the Federation still need to use the bathroom, but we've never actually seen it happen.
Do we? For all we know their combadges automatically transport their waste and turn them into food considering how Vance described to Osyraa where their replicated apples come from.

I saw a good design for that once...

Well, it's A design

The only rule since 1987 seems to be "replicatiors can't make substances banned in-universe by the Federation and can't replicate entire, huge, working ships." Everything else is up for grabs.

Biomimetic gel or a big shuttlecraft? No. Everything else? Negotiable.
I thought Voyager could replicate a large shuttlecraft?

Bashir could replicate bionumetic Gel because he is a doctor and 10 of his his bosses are going to ask him about whether he has a good reason for doing that over the next four years.

It's no different from when a real life Doctor is prescribing huge amounts of medicinal cocaine for a very small number of patients.

Bashir didn't lose his medical license because a cadre of admirals he had never met, had his back.

they can manufacture shuttlecraft, built using individual replicated parts. We don't see a shuttlecraft replicator until Prodigy, and its very complicated, still replicating individual pieces and putting them together. So it might not be physically possible to replicate something that big in one go.

Next week is anything but filler if the synopsis posted by a user in the discovery sub-reddit is to be believed.

The Breen pay Federation HQ a visit in the city-ship dreadnought which is 3 times the size of HQ and faces off against the Federation fleet
Holy Schnikes! I retract my statement if that is true.
