Honestly, after five seasons of nothing but the opposite, Rayner is refreshing as hell, as was Lorca. I like a blend of character types on a crew and that does not mean excluding characters like Rayner, who is also interesting as a Kellerun.

I think everyone being the same is a problem post Michelle Paradise. Since she has been showrunner, essentially all characters are shown as emotionally damaged, yet open, and particularly good listeners when someone else has a problem. The transition was largely complete once Georgiou was written off the show, and Stamets just got over being a prickly jerk. Now they're all nearly identical.

The problem with this is you can swap out characters in a scene, and it plays pretty much the same. Ideally in a dramatic show, you want characters who have very different personalities, and want very different things, so there's at least low-level conflict in the scenes, and every dyad has a slightly different dynamic.

Like, take DS9, for example, and look at Quark. Odo was something of a frenemy to him. Kira loathed him. Jadzia legitimately liked him as a friend. Sisko barely tolerated him. Miles and Julian were largely indifferent, in most cases. So you get very different interactions from scene to scene.

So yeah, Rayner is a breath of fresh air. I guess it doesn't matter that much, since it's the final season, but I hope he doesn't have all his edges sanded off.

I'll be happier once they stop collecting the pieces one by one next to dangerous encounters. It's old already.
That's not to say I didn't like other things about the episode. Just tired of the fetch quest.

Okay, not the last. This is the last: Not only do the reference the Dominion War, but Jinal backs up what I've long thought about the 24th Century. They thought they were evolved but they really weren't. During the Dominion War, anyone could've used what Burnham is looking for as a weapon, and it would've gained an advantage. Burnham had to prove that Humanity was more evolved in the 32nd Century than it was in the war-torn 24th. To which Burnham says, "We are at peace." But she's not arrogant about it and is realistic about how things could change.
Considering what S31 did to the founders with the morphogenic virus, I'd say they were more than capable of misusing the Progenitor tech.

There are only five, so we're 2/5ths of the way there already, on episode 3.

Only have to do this three more times, so the back four should be left to something else.

I thought the giant, invisible quarry fleas would be more at home on Strange New Worlds than Trill.

So this week we had the Trill of victory. Will we see the agony of defeat next time?

Well they could also have episodes where they don’t get a piece/clue

I tried to watch Justice League the other night, and I'm looking at the three mother boxes they need to fetch, so I'm explaining "halfassed" to the wife, with how it took Marvel 8 movies across ten years to track down 6 infinity stones... But how long is it going to take Batman to find 3 mother boxes? 1 hour 43 minutes.

8 out of 10 for me. I'm not the biggest fan of Trill episodes but this wasnt bad. Especially enjoyed the Rayner and Tilly scenes and the Saru/T'rina scenes. Sadly it looks like they've written out Nillson on the show (she was mentioned as having transferred to Voyager J). Like everyone else, I'm hoping we do finally see a Tzenkethi. And hope we run into the Breen too
I think I would have picked other planets besides familiar ones for this treasure hunt. But I don't write them.

I don't think there will be any time to round off all his edges. Maybe one rough edge, which they'll turn into a plot point, and that's it. I strongly suspect Rayner is Michelle Paradise's way of saying, "If I'd been around for Season 1, this is how I would've handled Lorca!"

On a different note: I'm not bothering with ratings until I've had a chance to re-watch the season after it's done. In the meantime, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Lorca wanted easily manipulated sheep who did not make any trouble, no matter what unconscionable shit he pushed them into doing, so he didn't have to kill them.

They were all mentally weakened from losing their Captain and ship in episode 2.

This seems to be what Moll dropped on Adira's arm

Maybe it’s an update of the patch Spock put on Kirk’s back in *The Undiscovered Country*

Cruz did a great job with playing Jinaal's consciousness in his body. I am sure that is a fun challenge for actors when they get to play a different character. But Cruz did a great job. You could tell that it was a different personality. And Cruz made Jinaal fun and interesting.
Cruz is very good in his role as Culber but he doesn't get to stretch much. It was a Spineresque performance.
