News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Like Vampire Diaries. Like My So Called Life. Like Freaks and Geeks. Like Buffy. Like Saved By the Bell that college years.

My fear is that it becomes Star Trek with hormones.
I like Freaks and Geeks, Never saw the others. Buffy seems to be well liked in these parts. So there are worse things to aspire too.

Trek has never suffered from a shortage of hormones.

There are FAR better examples to use than "THRESHOLD" (from just VOY alone), which if you take out the last 5 minutes, it is a very solid episode.

How about "THE FIGHT"? Or "FALSE PROFITS"? Or "FAVORITE SON"? Or "SPIRIT FOLK"? Or "FURY"?
No its not - the ENTIRE premise of "Hit Warp 10 and you quickly 'evolve' to your ultimate form <-- And don't get me started that the ultimate form for humanity is a 'frog-lizard' with lower animal intelligence..." is absolutely stupid and don't go saying "Well, they bHAD full sentient intelligence but Paris in lizard form REALLY TURNED LIZARD JANEWAY ON - so of course they had sex.

Threshold is absolute trite garbage front to back.

"THRESHOLD" had some great body horror in it. And some really good character scenes for Paris. (His pleading with Janeway to make the flight and why, hus self reflection at the end, etc.)

Compare that to one of my other examples. Like "SPIRIT FOLK".

No good character scenes and the crew look like morons for simply not turning off the program when actual members of their crew were in danger.

Or "FAVORITE SON". The less said about that one the better.

I know I've said this before, but it's actually fascinating to me how few notable TV shows take place on college campuses, considering how many take place in high schools. During my youth, the only successful college-based show I can think of is A Different World, though there have been others since (Felicity, Community, Dear White People, etc.). I presume a large part of this is because high school is a universal experience, but college is not (even today, only about 60-65% of high school grads go to college, and many of them leave after a year or two). Yet shows about doctors, lawyers, and cops are endlessly popular, despite few people being in any of those professions.

Possibly because of the issue with college-aged shows being unpopular, we've already seen from casting calls that they're looking for actors as young as 16. They're going to pack Starfleet Academy with a ton of Wesley Crushers, I think (in terms of age of characters, not actors) and try to depict it as some sort of space high school, rather than a quasi-military college.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer started in high school and then transitioned part of the cast to college, one guy to the trades, and spun off the other to LA for Angel. I thought it was well done at the time. I haven’t revisited it, so I don’t know if I’ll feel the same today.

My expectation based on what I’ve heard so far is that this is really more high school like than university like. Honestly, I’d like to see stories about how the Chief O’Brien’s end up in Starfleet. I think, you would have more colorful characters.

I’ll give it a shot. But I don’t expect it to last for more than a season or two.

I bolded the part of your quote that represents precisely how I feel.
