Which is the difference.

Come back and play the comparison game with Season 5. Or don't because the goals are still different.
It's not this complicated. I just compared 2 recent season finales, one happens to be a series finale is well. All the episodes are comparable in some way, these 2 just happened to be at the end of seasons.

Except, Disco's S4 finale is not the most recent finale prior to Picard's S3 finale, not at all. Since Disco S4's finale aired on March 17 2022, we've had the following finales:
Picard S2 May 5 2022
SNW S1 July 7 2022
Lower Decks S3 October 27 2022
Prodigy S1 December 29 2022
So, how about an actual reason this time for why we're comparing this specific finale to Picard's series finale?

Because I don't pay that much attention to the animated shows, and SNW has a widely covered finale based on nostalgia(like Picard). Therefore Discovery is the most independent show to compare it to.

I don't recall saying it was the most recent one though did I? Just comparable.

I don't even remember what happened in this finale. They were looking for creatures that looked like Leviathan from Mass Effect i recall.

That's what rewatches are for. The last few episodes are like watching a great scifi film...which they rarely make anymore. But we have Discovery for that. Or you can watch the Picard retread.

Of course it's not complicated. It's very easy to understand that the job of a series finale is very different from the job of a season finale, and that therefore it is inappropriate to compare them.
Not really, the difference is minimal

The difference is monumental. One has to provide a satisfying ending to a single season. Another has to provide a satisfying conclusion to an entire series. One is a goodbye to a few supporting characters and setting up the next step for the principals; the other is saying goodbye to every character.
It's not necessary to say goodbye to every single character, in fact that's kind of lazy. Leave some things open I'd say.

Both should have some import, both tend to involve past events, both should have scale, and so on. Very much the same, not exact but in the same ballpark.

No, they're hugely different. You might as well claim that the final sentence of the novel has the same job as the final sentence of the preceding chapters. It just doesn't.

Well now we know the Discovery finale was light years better than the Picard finale.
I like them both for different reasons, but I think the season finale for DSC was more "pure Star Trek" in the TMP/Gene Roddenberry sense, while PIC was a goodbye to TNG and setting up what could come next.

we were set up to believe Picard was LOTR, and we got Krull.
I believed PIC Season 3 was going to be "TNG's Star Trek VI" and that's what we got. The crew saving the galaxy from the biggest enemy of their respective eras one last time. I certainly prefer this ending to Nemesis.

Honestly the third season of Picard did enough for me to forgive all of the things I have hated about TNG since generations. I probably still won't go back and revisit very often, but I felt a love for the characters that I haven't felt in a couple decades.

You know what? I love season 4 of Star Trek Discovery. Just watched it all again and it still felt good.

Have not changed my mind but parts of it made me think of the movie Arrival and I think that's a good thing.

Just wish they would hurry up and release a physical media release of season 5

Season 4 of DSC outstrips Seasons 2 and 3 of PIC for creativity and intelligent storytelling. I have my issues with DSC and many of them, but Season 4 just blows the past 20 episodes of PIC out of the water, at least in terms of being "Star Trek" in feel and exploring the idea of contact with a truly alien life form. Species 10-C is one of the most Star Trek things that have been seen in live action streaming Trek.
