If there are borders in space then spacefaring peoples have learned how to demark them. Don't overthink it because the people in universe already have done.

Re-watching seasons 1, Chapel got a retroactive level of badass this season. In All Those Who Wander she was capable but not prepared, being somewhat out of her depth. Since this season gave her a war veteran background with M'Benga she's more specifically combat ready.

When you think about it, SNW Chapel is already so far removed from TOS Chapel character-wise that they might as well have let Jess Bush just run with a 'new' character. I mean, other than the name and the fact that they are in the medical department, they don't really share any other traits. If they wanted to, she still could have had all the relationship hijinks with Spock. Most episodes she comes across as a more competent medico than the CMO.

TOS Chapel has no real “traits”. As is often mentioned when this comes up, she’s basically a blank slate. No real thought was ever put into Chapel on TOS. Her character, her backround, her personality or any thing else. IIRC, WALGMO wasn’t even originally written for Chapel .

I dunno, I feel like having some hand-to-hand capacity against other humanoids is a very different thing from being able to go up against an animal-like quadrupedal predator capable of spraying poison at a distance.

Also, she did lose that fight with the Klingons and had to get rescued by Joseph. And her combat experience in the flashbacks of "Under the Cloak of War" wasn't that extensive -- her trauma primarily came from her medical service.

Fighting the Gorn in SNW is more akin to big game hunting or swimming with sharks than fighting in a war, especially as a field medic. Something bigger, faster, and deadlier than you that can sense you more easily than you can sense them.

Plus, there's the whole thing with the mystery surrounding them and the stories/legends about them universally slaughtering virtually every human that has ever seen one in person. That, together with a lot of people's disposition toward reptile phobias, could easily make even grizzled war veterans panic.

The Gorn aren't exactly setting up forward operating bases and firing at them with disruptors, all the "boots on the ground" stuff is an entirely new experience for everyone involved.

I don’t really worry about plot-armor, here are the number of “main” characters… So pretty much everyone has plot-armor.

When Spock died in ST II, he wasn’t necessarily coming back, hence Saavik and David being groomed as potential young leads in a series of telemovies. Plan was quickly aborted when Nimoy announced at the wrap party that he would be interested in directing a ST III.

I question "tendencies" but yes, it was mentioned in Spock Amok that she had a very Chapel-esque relationship with a woman.

I missed that. This adds to my feeling of her being EVERYTHING. Too much.

I loved Life is Strange the original, but the later game True Colors was okay but one issue I had was the character (spoilers ahead) was just too perfect. She's got special powers. She is liked by everyone. She's into cool music. She can play music! She can play RPGs. She can be straight or gay or whatever she wants as she's everything. Chapel has a bit of that going on. War hero, tech genius, medical genius, academic genius, fist fighter, love interest, sole survivor...

The actress I quite like. I think she does a lot with it. But the writers have this weird like of her that feels unbalanced.

Well, the clear implication in Spock Amok is that she's pretty terrible at relationships. The pacing may have been off, but her and Spock worked out about exactly as we might have expected it to given what we've been shown of her history.

That's not quite true. Chapel displayed humorous traits in WaLGMo, Obsession, and Lights of Zetar. The main difference is Bush's Chapel is a protagonist whereas Barrett was just a bit of colour in the background.

They match up pretty well to me. Plus Jess Bush's Christine Chapel is seven years younger than Majel's at the time we first met her. So...yeah. Time goes by. People change. But that hair color stays the same (until it's not ;) ).
Indeed yes. It's kind of like reading a brief biographical excerpt on a person vs. watching a full interview. You get different facets of the person.

Hell, early Kirk was just a sketch of a full-rounded character until the series progressed. We wouldn't hold James T. Kirk aloft as a pop culture icon unless the writers had time to develop the character and William Shatner had the time to decide how to play it.

Eh, she kind of sucked at hand to hand combat. Without the enhancement drug she'd been dead in seconds. Not sure about most of the other things on the list provided either. Well the medical thing is true of course. But our heroes tend to be good at their jobs.
