Seems like I'm definitely going against the grain here, but I absolutely hated this episode, I thought the premise was stupid, the musical numbers were not enjoyable for me. This is the first time I've ever given an episode a 1.

Having said that, if someone enjoyed it, I'm happy for them. For me, this wasn't it and I hope we never see anything like this again on Star Trek.

Teenage me would have absolutely hated this episode. Adult me absolutely loves it.

Now I love it more in theory than practice:
I really did not like that the characters were self-aware they're in a musical, the anomaly, or how they had to "trigger" songs. It needed to have been a more natural part of the plot. As a result many of the songs felt as flat as the plot. (Also, again, no reason for Kirk to be there).

Now, for a tv Show I don't expect Disney classics level songs. But still, I had hoped for, like, a villain song, a sailor-crew song, a dramatic love song. Instead it was all about their personal problems, and such felt a bit same-y and familiar. But they were well made. And the Klingons were just the best.

However I am absolutely in awe of the actors voices and performances. It was not just obvious everyone was having a blast - they're just the absolute best!

At the end, I don't think this episode was perfect. But it's pure existence is reason to be happy alone.

Batel might not die onscreen but she might disappear and be considered missing in action, which would be good as dead given we know how often characters go missing in Trek and are presumed to have died.

From what I read on Carol Marcus, she unilaterally decided to raise David by herself since Kirk was galavanting around the entire Galaxy on the Enterprise.

So he didn't get a chance to be part of his life because she said nope to that.

She never said "Enterprise", just gallivanting around the galaxy. Kirk did not get the Enterprise until a few more years.

Since I find it unlikely that a fan favorite like Jess Bush is going to be written off the show, I wonder if we are going to experience a bit of a time jump between S2 and S3. A year or two in-show would see time for Chapel to leave, and then return. Since the strike means that it'll probably be close to two years before we get S3, a time jump becomes more reasonable that way as well.

Yes. This is one aspect of the show I'm extremely tired of.
The thing Chapel is going on is 2 months (or so).

Didn't the quantum probability field or whatever it is originate from DS9? The episode with the El-Aurian and his gambling device?

* Uhura is lonely despite being the center of everyone else’s drama. It makes me wonder if they’re going to do her and Spock.
...
She has been giving him looks. I don't know if it means anything, or if my shipping brain is just moving at full steam, but it seems like something is there. Then again, it could be the very something we see in TOS, too. Uhura was always warm and familiar with Spock. That there might be deep affection there wouldn't be a surprise.
