Watched it while having lunch after fully preparing to treat it as "meh!" but I absolutely loved it! Having a reason for them to burst into song worked and it made it more than just an episode they wanted to do as a musical. I loved how they were singing in character and not separating that from their singing versions (sometimes I've seen and done musicals where the person turns into themselves to sing and back to character when the song finishes). The Klingon segment was absolutely hilarious!

Coming back from the beginning titles with Pike saying, "Well, that just happened!" was hilarious!

They did a nice job with the episode, and I'm loving the season so far. Nothing has really lagged for me.

When Pelia mentioned about communicating via music, it reminded me of when I met Bruce Hyde (Kevin Riley). He did lectures based on the premise that music could be a more effective form of communication due to the more universal aspects of it.

I have no problems with a musical episode. I just didn't really find any of the songs particularly great. Once More With Feeling is my top tier musical episode of a 'non-musical show' and I can remember having audio rips of those songs on my mp3 player and listening to them repeatedly.

The Magicians had some great musical episodes although I think they were using existing songs generally.

It was definitely an enjoyable episode and I liked how things played out in it so I will go with an 8. If I was humming in my head specific songs or parts I'm sure it would be a lot higher.

The last conversation between Pike and Batel was giving me severe death flags for her.

and the Klingon Boy Band is so lol.

This episode had an incredibly stupid premise even in-universe (they needed a Trelane-esque being to justify it) but it was something I forgive a lot of flaws due to the emotional development.

Some random thoughts:

* Jess Bush is fantastically sexy in her number. It needs to be said. However, the big thing is it is a woman choosing her career over a man. You still don’t see that very often in media.

* In the words of Friends with Kirk and La’an, “It could have been worse. He could have shot her.”

* Speaking of which, actually addressing Carol Marcus is something I’m glad they did.

* Spock’s breakup depression song is a math pun so chef’s kiss.

* Uhura is lonely despite being the center of everyone else’s drama. It makes me wonder if they’re going to do her and Spock.

* Captain Batel couldn’t be throwing up more death flags than if she was two weeks from retirement on her ship the USS Immortal.

* The Klingon Boy Band thing was hilarious but I now have to wonder if Klingons have boy bands or if the Federation DID infect them (in which case destroying the Federation was justified)

* I really expected Pelia to have more comments on this. “Oh, yeah, I wrote that song.”

Gotta admit, HAD they worked out some sort of easter egg/homage to this song, I would have loved it:

I would've died! I'm actually pretty impressed that the episode was an earnest musical and not filled with meta stuff like this. Probably a good choice given they already had their meta explosion in the crossover.

10! What a blast!! That's the third 10 I've given to SNW this season and I rarely give 10s.

After the 1st season, we were guessing what would be in store for the 2nd season. My educated guess was that we'd get a musical episode. So, woot! Got that one right!! :techman:

That said, I was a bit skeptical, but they pulled it off! They used the musical format very creatively and it worked! This is probably first time in history where a character in a musical intentionally triggered a song in order to collect data about it!

The songs themselves were excellent. Lyrics were creative. And they hit all the right notes, not just musically but emotionally.

I wouldn't want too many musical episodes, but this was excellent.

Plot points, this really shuts the door on Chapel/Spock. It's a turning point for both. We're seeing how Spock goes from more emotional to the less emotional character we see in TOS. And his song about being the Ex was powerful. Excellently done.

This is how you do a prequel effectively. They've mastered showing us the surprising starts for some familiar characters, taking them on journeys, and then we see how they get to where we know them in TOS. Prequels aren't even my preferred format but they're doing this one exceptionally well.

Kudos to the team for taking a chance on a musical episode. It paid off big time. It left grinning ear to ear. Can't ask for more than that!

I'm even warming up to Wesley as Kirk.

Well I didn't hate it. It's cool that they made the singing as part of an encountered phenomenon. Much better than I thought it would be. I'm glad La'an and Kirk have been sorted out. I love her character, but didn't care for her pining over Kirk every time she saw him.

Spock stumbling onto the bridge drunk at the end was wonderful.

Klingons made me laugh.

So does the internet let us know who in the show sang their parts? it would be cool if they all did.
