That was a very cool episode that was certainly the crew encountering something strange and new! I expect there will be haters but yet again they will be in the minority I think.

What the HECK did I just watch?!

I'm renaming this Star Trek: Strange New Glee...or Star Trek: Strange New Gimmick.

I don't doubt it was the most gimmicky Star Trek episode I've ever seen and coming a couple of episodes after the Lower Decks one, that's saying something.

I find it impossible to rate. There's no escaping it's one of the most utterly absurd and downright stupid plots I've ever seen on Trek. I kind of feel they blew it by having it be generic musical theatre fare. I wish they'd played it a bit straighter by having the crew sing a cappella. The music accompaniment was just too much for me. By the time it got to the finale and the singing, dancing Klingons...I was literally cringing.

Yet, I didn't hate it. I enjoyed a fair bit of it; certainly the subtler, more character based moments and songs. I enjoyed hearing the crew sing: highlights for me being Uhura, Spock and Chapel. Some nice little character moments even if it did veer pretty far on the soap opera side.

As with the Lower Decks episode, and more so, I just cannot see this as a canonical, regular episode; it's just waaay too out there. It occurred to me they should have done what Futurama does with its episodes like "Anthology of Interest" and "Naturama", "Reincarnation", etc--they exist outside the canon as bonus, deliberately insane and wacky tales. They shouldn't have even tried to pretend this was a serious episode with a genuine plot ("improbability wave" my ass). If you're going to town, then why not, but don't pretend it's meant to be taken seriously. That's my head canon anyway, and the only way I can accept this.

Anyway...again, I didn't hate it, and I liked a fair bit of it, but I did find it a struggle at times. I'm a less is more kinda guy (and I don't generally like musicals, so take that into account when you come gunning for me).

Once again, posting my thoughts on the episode before reading the Thread.

I honestly thought I wasn't going to like this one as I'm not a fan of Musical Theatre.

The above said, I DID like this one, and really have to give a hand top everyone involved as they pulled off a ridiculous concept, and made it all work marvelously. (I mean come on, is the premise any more ridiculous than say TNG S6 Masks was or TOS S3 Spock's Brain? )

The difference from the above examples of ridiculous Trek? THIS episode was enjoyable and entertaining; and In the end they gave a plausible STAR TREK based explanation, and CONTINUED to showcase that they really know who to do character drama with these characters/actors; and made it fun to watch to boot.

So yeah, another 10 from me for something I expected to only be able to tolerate. The production people behind this series are absolutely AMAZING!

We got more deep and emotional insights to the characters, and all their personal stories advanced and made sense - and even stayed within known STAR TREK canon boundaries. We now know Carol Marcus is pregnant (and hasn't yet told Kirk to 'Stay away...'); and Chapel (true to this version of the character who seems to subconsciously HATE being in any committed relationship, and will find a way to sabotage any relationship she's in), has dumped Spock and is slowly realizing just how much she hurt him emotionally <--- And this whole situation is probably what will cause Spock top really embrace his Vulcan side and ignore his Human side too. And yeah, Chapel will overcompensate and get engaged to Korby o the rebound just to try and prove to herself she CAN be in a committed relationship, but we all know how that will end in 8 or so years, 5 of which Korby will be missing for.

And Chapel won't disappear from the show - I'm sure the 3 months of her fellowship will mostly occur in the time between the end of SNW S2 and the (hopefully will still will happen, assuming the AMPTP gets it's collective head out of its ass and start negotiating with the WGA and SAG/AFTRA to bring an end to the strikes delaying the majority of Hollywood production in both TV and film) start of SNW S3.

Another few seasons like these first two and Strange New Worlds will become my #1 favorite Trek series with the original 1966-69 STAR TREK a close second.

This IS the absolute best/most consistently entertaining Star Trek franchise since the original STAR TREK hands down.:techman:

(PS: And I LOVED the short 'Solid Gold Kiingons' song and dance number too, :klingon::rofl::guffaw::klingon:
as well as the semi acapella version of the opening SNW theme done during the opening credits of the episode.)

Edited to add: AND the use of the ORIGINAL STAR TREK theme music at the end - WOW!

That was great! How can you not like something with the phrase "Spock-bop-a-loo-bop-a-Spock-bam-boom" in it?

That musical just had a successful off-Broadway run. The writer (and singer in that video) is a very talented composer and lyricist who started as a YouTuber writing lyrics to video game songs.

9/10 it was very well done and enjoyable considering I don't like musicals. Celia Rose Gooding was great, and Ethan Peck could really belt out a tune as well. The Klingon bit was hilarious. Overall exceeded my expectations.

Also, I guess we know definitively that D7s and K't'ingas are one and the same class (I guess they were upgraded between TOS and TMP).

Spock's "I'm the X" was my second favorite but Uhura's solo number was amazing. I'll have that stuck in my head for weeks and hope it's available to stream somewhere. I'd been looking forward to it since hearing it in the teaser.

The Klingon punk rock/boy band was a little too silly and started delving into parody territory but the rest was so good I can forgive. I'm glad this was chalked up to a strange subspace phenomenon and not another alien race trying to communicate through unconventional means.
It's not: "I'm the X..."

It's: "I'm the Ex..." (as in Ex-Lover)

Did Chappel's "I'm Ready" and Spock's "I'm the Ex" have the same music? sounded very similar to me.

INotice the tie in to Ad Astra Per Aspera where Spock said Una's secret was a love of Gilbert and Sullivan? And here she is singing it!

Both are a callback to a Short Trek minisode (produced as part of Discovery S2) where Spock and Una get to know each other better under duress. The ep is called "Q&A" (no godlike entities involved) if you want to see more G&S singing.
