After this week's war-driven episode, Next week's musical episode is the palate cleanser we need.
Who was Clint Howard? The medical officer?
I hope M'Benga gets to have a more positive arc going from here, later on. I suppose that's why they're going to such dark places with him in the first place.
Overall, solid episode, although it could have used another 6-7 or so minutes especially at the end. La'an seemed not to buy the cover story either, but we don't know the meaning behind her and M'Bengas little eye gesture yet. Just how many people are covering for the doctor? Maybe they saved further discussion about it for future follow-ups, but it would have been nice to see more of the immediate aftermath (and no more flashbacks plz). Pike did say there may be an inquiry at a later date. Another court room piece?

Yeah it's another quite mediocre one. They really go way up and way down this season.

I found the first two thirds enjoyable, but by the end it was a bit of a missed opportunity. I find Babs Olusanmokun to be a genuinely moving, emotional actor - I wish we'd gotten more of a Duet style episode with more time spent on on him and the Klingon in conversation. Instead there was too much going on between the Chapel/Spock b-plot and the war flashbacks, and what should have been the meat of the episode only got enough time to hit key points & move the story forward. A pity!
Maybe some of the MACO's got transferred over?
Not every MACO would make it to StarFleet Captain.
That single Warp Nacelle seemed interesting as far as a inspired choice as a Transport StarShip.Kelcie Mae reminds me of the 2001 spaceplane

I'm not going to sign on with that, since I don't share that opinion of DSC or PIC.
But still, I don't remember anyone on DSC straight-up murdering someone and getting away with it. (DSC's dark reputation is mostly unearned.)
Edit: I don't count Harry Mudd, since his preferred final version of the timeline didn't have any casualties. But yeah, you can make the case that he would have found them acceptable.

What a fantastic episode. It was heavy and dark. This is one that will be sticking in my mind for a long time. I remember back when Star Trek VI: TUC came out and it was considered dark for Star Trek. This episode makes TUC look like Star Trek IV: TVH!

I was hoping this was more focused on Ortegas but I thought she had two very good scenes. Still I liked seeing M’Benga get more to do and find out more about him. I take it that he was special forces at one time and then left to become a doctor. I know of a US Navy SEAL that became a doctor so it isn’t unheard of.
That Andorian guy was pretty creepy looking.
9/10 for me.
The episode made me think of my uncle who was a Vietnam vet. I know the war changed him too.

For Discovery I thank the obvious choice would of course been the Empress. For Picard people would Say Jurati (though of course she has been mentally manipulated). But really the best example of someone from our own universe would of course be TNG's Worf. Who deliberately seeks out to murder a high ranking political leader from another government. Though you might argue a written reprimand is punishment, it well and truly isn't.
