It almost seens like everyone is talking about a WB romance show then Star Trek. Lol

Let's not forget that TNG wasted no time letting us know that Riker and Troi had a romantic history, that Picard and Crusher had some sort of unspoken attraction to each other, and had Yar jump Data's synthetic bones in its very second episode.

Heck, the very first TREK pilot ever filmed was all about voyeuristic aliens trying to get Pike to mate with Vina in captivity, complete with discussion of "strong female drives."

Sex and relationships have been part of STAR TREK since Day One.

EDIT: And, oh yes, the one-and-only STAR TREK movie actually made by Roddenberry established a romantic history between Decker and Ilia, established that Ilia came from a race of super-sexual aliens, and ended with a cosmic orgasm. :)

Americans tend to embrace heritage, even if they are as you say naturally born. It's not utterly irrelevant to them. They use terms like African-American and Asian-American for that reason. Those terms do have some issues, but they are the terms they use commonly and shouldn't be taken offensively.

But you didn't say "Half Chinese, half British", you implied one half of her was her nationality, and the other half was her ethnicity, that was separate from her nationality.

Agreed. By all accounts, including from himself, Gene was a hypersexual man, and he loved as much sex and titillation in his shows as he could manage.

In fairness, post-SNW, I'm tempted to reinterpret T'Pring's motivations in "Amok Time" to make her less murderous.

"You really told him you were plotting to either get him killed or to kill his best friend?"

"Yes."

"Why would you do that?"

"I know the kind of people who serve in Starfleet. I knew that Spock was never in any real danger; I knew Spock's crewmates would come up with a way to keep his captain alive; and I knew the shock of believing his best friend dead would finally sever the last remnants of the ties that once bound us. And I had no other option to terminate the engagement under traditional Vulcan law."

Absolute bosh.

T'Pring was coldly, murderously logical in her choices. Her original intent was for Stonn to challenge Spock, but she saw an opportunity when Spock showed up with Kirk and McCoy. She chose Kirk for exactly the reasons she stated, not some belief that somehow starfleet would save the day for her.

The only out you can realistically argue for her is that when she chose Kirk as her champion, she was also in the grip of Pon Farr and not in her right mind, yet it was still a 'flawlessly logical' choice in terms of the outcome she desired.

I mean, you can be tempted to reinterpret her motivations any why you like, but what you are suggesting is a massive stretch that takes away her accountability.

And Spock flying through a cosmic sphincter to mind-meld with a space clitoris.

Yeah not nearly as much and as melodramatic thsn what SNW is getting at. I feel like im watching Dawsons Creek. Lol

Absolute bosh.

It's an attempt to re-interpret the TOS version of T'Pring in order to reconcile that version with the SNW version. The SNW version is more dramatically interesting and compelling, but has motivations that differ enough that the discrepancy seems worth an attempt to reconcile the two as a mental exercise.

I mean, you can be tempted to reinterpret her motivations any why you like, but what you are suggesting is a massive stretch

Yeah, probably.

that takes away her accountability.

I mean, there was no accountability. Her actions were completely legal and she got away with it scot-free.

One of my problems with nu-Trek and Enterprise. IDIC would indicate that the Vulcans would at least embrace the differences and keep an open mind. Logic would dictate that they show a little more self-control on the issue individually and as a species, eh?

Cultures having built-in contradictions actually makes them more realistic. And few civilizations manage to be 100% consistent with their highest ideals, all the time and every day. That's why they're called "ideals," not reality.

Heck, Americans supposedly believe that "all men are created equal," but our history shows that we have always struggled when it comes to putting that into practice.

No. The chief difference between SNW's depiction of sexuality and TOS's and early TNG's, is that SNW is more interested in deeper emotions than TOS or early TNG. That's why even though almost all the characters are pretty damn sexy, none of them are sexually objectified.

They have been pretty good with not objectifying characters but, I feel Christina Chong was sexualised in episode 3 and I found it cheap.
