"Returning to a planet that dredges up tragic memories, Captain Pike and his landing party find themselves forgetting everything, including their own identities as he confronts a ghost from his past." - TrekMovie.com

They have a track record of turning out very entertaining episodes, so I'm reasonably sure this will be cool, but to be honest, I still wish they would do less revisiting of old places, people and concepts. I guess it's kinda baked into the idea of doing a “Pike show”, but at this point I'm pretty confident these writers are capable of telling compelling stories without having to rely on old stuff. I wonder if the part of the audience that's new to Trek isn't overwhelmed by the amount of callbacks they are presented with. With these last couple of episodes I often found myself having to give my non-Trekkie wife a quick rundown of stuff like augments, the Eugenics wars, Khan etc.

I am loving the show. Really. But I do hope this is a “strange new world”. Not a lot of those IMHO.

Despite it supposedly being the franchise's party line, we didn't actually see very many "new" planets in TOS. Okay, by virtue of being the first series, they were all new to the audience, but a majority of the time the planets they went to were either known or already visited by someone from Earth/the Federation. There really isn't very much actual exploration done in Star Trek.

If we saw "new" planets all the time, we'd have a lot of Prime Directive violations. Just sayin'!

This is a good point! TNG, VOY, and ENT probably have the most "strange new worlds" stuff happening in them...

Voyager and Enterprise more so than TNG. TNG still had quite a bit of pre-explored/contacted planets. Even then, since Voyager was about getting back home, that means Enterprise was the only series purely about exploration for its own sake. And they abandoned that premise in the third season.
