In my opinion, Prodigy was the best of P+ Trek. It is a shame. I like all the new shows, but to be honest, I would have rather seen LD cancelled. LD is a very good show, but not as good as Prodigy. Like others said the animation for Prodigy has to be more expensive than Lower Decks.
Small sample size, but here's my experience from a sample size of 4:
My son was 11 when Prodigy premiered...He was interested and enjoying it from the start, but there was a break after only 4 episodes and he got annoyed with that. He still kept watching and enjoying it but there was a 9 month break after episode 10. He was eagerly awaiting its return for a few months, but by the time it came back he had just completely lost interest and didn't want to watch it any more. He also felt it was too childish for him at that point and pointed out that some of Pog's dialogue was "cringey" for him. I continued to watch week to week on my own. He did eventually watch some of the back half only when I kept bringing it up and now wants to finish only because he knows it's being removed. I feel like the 9 month break in the middle of the season just destroyed the momentum the show had even among its fans. Even I had a bit of a hard time getting back into the first few episodes after the break.
I've also wondered if the lack of a short recap or "saga cell" made it hard for kids to keep track of what was going on.
I have a nephew who was 9 when it premiered. He likes all the Star Wars animated shows and Marvel etc.. He was not interested in Prodigy because it was Star Trek and he thought it would be confusing to get into and understand. He never did watch it.
I have a niece who was 7 when it premiered. She saw some episodes on Nickelodeon and liked it but then didn't know when it was on and just stopped watching.
I have an adult friend who has watched every other Star Trek show and likes all the other new ones, but refused to watch this because it looked too kiddie for him. So from the people around me, there is an adult refusing to watch it and the target audience of kids not interested in it.
Besides LD likely being cheaper, it also has a clearly defined target audience, that it probably hits well enough. Prodigy may well appeal to the same audience, rather than to the children it was supposed to bring aboard. In my opinion, Prodigy was the best of P+ Trek. It is a shame. We've gotten a boat load of content that I never thought we'd have. I'm quite satisfied even if it ends.
This exactly.Yeah, I’m kinda split on this. I am happy we got what we got…but I also think shows like PRO deserve a little more time. DSC is fine to sunset at this point. PIC ended on a great note and was never intended to go for more than 3 seasons. But, the other shows are still running strong and have more to say I think.

Perhaps, now that the other series are being retired and cancelled, it's a good time to bring back Short Treks to fill some of the gaps. It would allow a variety of stories to be told and perhaps even continue the story of the series that have ended. Plus, the shorter length reduces the budget.
Then make it happen. It's not a matter of it ending. It's a matter of it being erased and faded into obscurity. The thing that I don't like the most of this whole thing is Prodigy is being removed and the only physical media we have so far is the first 10 episodes. I don't want to forget this series, and if I bring it up in conversation, I don't want the response to be something like "Oh, that failed series, never seen or heard of it" or something like that. Prodigy deserves to be seen and remembered.
Then make it happen.
A show only deserves it if people put forth effort.
Generate interest. Talk it up. Share it.How? Paramount Plus already said they were going to remove it. I guess just tell everyone to watch the series this weekend and do nothing else. This is a long term thing I'm more worried about, not short term.
I know. My point was, if Paramount are unwilling to pay to make full series, a few shorts here and there may satisfy fans while being cheaper. Those cost money too. If Paramount is trying to save money, Short Treks seems like wasteful spending.
In the late 24th century, there was an experimental starship manned by a group of child refugees from a penal colony. Unfortunately records from that period are spotty.I hope that Kovich mentions the Protostar and the kids during Discovery's final season.
Amazing.
It's not enough to cancel the show? It really has to be *removed* from the streaming service?...
What are you basing that on?
