I was sort of hoping for a callback to our very first encounter with Illyrians. Una's attorney could have said something like: "We Illyrians have been skeptical of humans and other species from the Federation for over a century. The first of our people to meet Earth humans had their vessel robbed and were left stranded in a dangerous region of space. That story has been passed down for generations and it's one of the reasons why we can't just assume that humans and their Federation allies will just see things our way."
I'm not sure if those guys are supposed to be the same Illyrians as Una's people. I think SNW wanted to use Una's background from the novelverse and are ignoring the aliens encountered in ENT.

They are the same. They were shown in a computer screenshot when Una was researching her own race and the writers have come out and said that they're the same.

And as a final addendum, if this episode gets critiques from the usual corners as being "too political" it's really 100% clear it's just the nostalgia lenses of these cranks because this is what's been missing from modern Trek - a bonafide message episode that clubs you over the head, rather than being extremely subtle and ultimately saying nothing of import.

You know, for a long while I have really enjoyed your critiques of all the episodes. I wholly agree with your review here and assessment. There is more to Trek than pew pew and space battles. I just wanted to let you know.

Una's just one of the human-looking Illyrians whereas Casey Biggs' from ENT had the pronounced forehead ridges.

I never really understood why they felt the need to make some link to the ENT episode. All that happened was Archer encountered an alien-of-the-week ship and fucked over their crew. The aliens showed no signs of genetic enhancement whatsoever. Was it a case of 'oops, we reused an alien race name by mistake, so now we have to cover up our screwup by linking them together"?

Presumably laws are put in place by the Federation Council. Earth is just 1 member. Why is their bad experience amplified to affect all the species in the Federation? That's like Vulcans demanding all Starfleet personnel and Federation citizens undergo emotional suppression just because their world was almost destroyed by a bunch of emotional Vulcans.

The Season 1 episode already linked them together, or at least the art team did.

It may have been a while lol.
I mean, I certainly have derived more thought provoking ideas from Abrams and Discovery than I did from ENT and VOY.

That's just me though ;)

For fun.

ADMIRAL APRIL: Yes. I fast-tracked Una's application to Starfleet and all her promotions. She's totally awesome.

ADMIRAL PASALK: Admit the fact that Admiral Robert April's eager support of your career is due to sheer unprofessional nepotism. His is, I believe, related to you. Yes! Bob's your uncle.

CAPTAIN BATEL: Do you have in your possession a serum which, when administered, can give superhuman strength like that of an Augment? Did you know such substances are banned in the Federation? And do you realize the consequences if this testosterone booster should fall into the hands of the Klingons?

DOCTOR M'BENGA: *inaudible*

erica.jpg

CAPTAIN BATEL: What was that, Doctor? Could you repeat that for all to hear?

DOCTOR M'BENGA: It is a placebo. There is no such serum. Other than spinach. Which is an excellent source of iron and Vitamin A.

CAPTAIN PIKE: Who do you take me for? The Marshal of Skybase One hunting Mutts?
