Oh, Canada (in canon)!

Apparently the upcoming SNW episode "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" takes place in 21st century Toronto. https://www.thestar.com/entertainme...season-2-of-star-trek-strange-new-worlds.html
Odd, leaked photos from the filming of that episode showed police officers with American flag patches on their uniforms, which would be rather out of place in Toronto.

They end up materializing in an alley in downtown Toronto and make their way to Yonge-Dundas Square.

“Seems to be New York City, mid-21st century,” says Kirk.

“It’s Toronto, the biggest city in what used to be called Canada,” Noonien-Singh corrects him. “You know, Maple Leafs, politeness, poutine.

So Canada and US have merged into the United States of North America? Or supposedly there are 52 states by 2033.

^ Or maybe La'an's just bad at history.

I mean, we KNOW Canada still exists in Trek's future, Linky. So it looks like La'an just got it wrong.

And besides, there's never gonna be a North American Union anyway. Canada doesn't want it, WE don't want it, literally nobody wants it!

”What used to be Canada” could mean many things from her point of view—used to be an independent country before “United Earth”; used to be Canada before breaking into smaller independent units; etc. And she says it that way because the changed status hasn’t happened yet. Or it’s happening “now” in the episode…or…looking forward to how it works out in the story.

But the status of Canada as an independent and intact state is not firmly established either way, so there’s some wiggle room for the dialogue.

Why would there be any doubt? It's not like nations ceased to exist when United Earth was formed. They just became part of a greater whole.

I mean, the USA still exists, so why wouldn't Canada? It makes no sense.

A Hip reference would be nice. Or get Hawksley Workman in there to give them directions.

The Ottoman Empire existed for many centuries. The Hapsburg Empire. The Soviet Union for nearly a century. And I could literally go on with dozens more. The status of states is NOT fixed through time.

The most famous Canadian of them all ->

PARIS: Fort Knox. The largest repository of gold bullion in Earth's history. Over fifty metric tons worth over nine trillion U.S. dollars.
JANEWAY: Keep going.
PARIS: Well, er, when the new world economy took shape in the late twenty second century and money went the way of the dinosaur, Fort Knox was turned into a museum.

Along with a new world government, maybe?
