Not bad, but a little too light-weight, considering everything going on and war with the Klingons on the brink of possibly reigniting. Carol Kane is a good addition to the cast. Spock is too emotional and too straight. April is put to good use. La'an can handle herself around Klingons pretty well. Looks like the Gorn are going to continue to build up in the background. Spock drinking with Klingons and the way that played out was a little cringey. Chapel was a standout. Everyone else is okay. Overall, though, I never felt any jeopardy and things went off a little too easy.

I give it a 6.

The person who wouldn't take Una or Pike's calls means that she's an old acquaintance of both of theirs and/or she's related to Pike.
Please be Yeoman Colt.

So Dr. M'Benga keeps giving us reasons why he gets demoted in the future. He always keeps some kind of steroid around now too huh?

I wonder if Klingons killed M'Benga's wife. Also wonder if his hatred of them is going to go anywhere, considering in TOS he's in the 'A Private Little War' episode featuring Klingons and no grudge against them is mentioned.

Admittedly my knowledge that M'Benga and Chapel are alive and well in TOS killed any tension for me in their scenes.

It seems they are trying to adhere to Menagerie's line of Spock never disobeying Pike's orders before (despite it being broken in Discovery) by having Spock disobey April's orders instead of Pike's.

I'm still not clear why they didn't just make Pelia an El-Aurian instead of whatever her new species was called, who seem to be just like El-Aurians from the way they're described.

It was great to see this cast return, and I have to say it was another home run for me. Bring on this season!

i am intrigued to see how they handle the continuing Gorn threat--I am assuming it's a recurring theme for the season.

I also have to say I was stunned when Dr. M'Benga mentioned the number of Federation casualties as a result of the Klingon War. In retrospect it shouldn't be too surprising, but it does bring home why the war would still be traumatic for so many Starfleet officers--not to mention Federation civilians--and tensions between the two powers remain, at best, frosty up until 2293.

If the Gorn are going to go into a full fledged publicized war with the Fed this season, it makes the lack of acknowledgement by any of the crew in regards to this in TOS even more jarring.

The reference to an obscure Klingon dialect might explain the bizarre book scene in Star Trek 6.

I like this series, I love the cast and the characters, but honestly, with every episode it seems to make something in TOS more jarring and/or implausible. Why? Why do violence to basic characters and story lines which have been foundational for decades, when there is so much new ground that could be covered?

You know, I suspect it'll all end with them finding some way to forge a temporary peace with the Gorn--or, at the least, figuring out a way to avoid full-scale war. I'm confident it'll be a good story, and an interesting explanation.

James Kirk: No! No! The Gorn turned La'an into a breeding sack! NOOOOOO!!!!!

Chapel: Mindwiping mind meld?

Spock: Mindwiping mind meld. And everyone on this ship is on orders never to speak of this again.

Really not a fan of this new thing with every captain having to have a catchphrase when they go to warp. You can't force a phrase to become iconic.
(...)
I'm meh on the convenient super-soldier serum
Those were the scenes I didn't like. We gotta go help our friend, no time... oh hey wait, let's figure out how to say "Engage!" a different way before we go save people...
And the lame stupid fight scene in which the hoarse whisperer turns from healer to berserk was just idiotic. Would've been a 4, but the Klingon makeup, costumes, and HIvje' with bloodwine pushed it to a 5.

I was thinking the exact same thing :D

That was Morska. Klingon for the Galactic Traveler from Marc Okrand explains a few dialects ;)

A good start to the season. A solid 7.

"I want the ship to go. Now."

Really miss Hemmer. I guess in the end he was a cipher for Uhura?

Still having trouble hearing dialogue from time to time.
