I have already mentioned one of those moments, but you've ignored it. I'm not convinced doing so again would elicit any further admission on your part.

One moment from a franchise that's been running for almost 6 decades with a crazy amount of episodes and films. Don't you think that's very strange or peculiar? And beyond that, has Picard's Enterprise ever moved like that before? ( didn't read back because I'm sorry, if you're basing your argument on a single moment in Star Trek canon then yeah, I don't know what to say to you. And if it's from the new stuff, I don't really care.)

It also never before had the Syracuse's warp engines and who knows how nimble that starship was before she was decommissioned and cannibalized? Just chalk it up to Data and being intimately familiar with how a Galaxy-class starship can book it at high speeds.

I don't think you even need that. I feel like it could do that before but we just didn't see it. Like I love the TOS films especially TWOK and the Battle in Mutara Nebula but if they did something with those era ships today I have no problems if the ships were more maneuverable. I think the only thing I would hate if they started pulling 180s like the Vipers in new BSG.

Put simply: there's an in-universe reason for it and we don't NEED to have the new maneuverability we just saw match up with visual effects from the late '80s and early '90s. It wasn't until DS9 and then the Dominion War we saw Federation starships be as nimble and fluid in flight as, say, a real world fighter plane, doing barrel rolls and wild spinning maneuvers in battles.

We should just chalk it up to 2023 production values and CGI and stop trying to make every piece of the puzzle fit, because in any franchise this old and vast they all won't.

I didn't say there was one moment, I said I mentioned one. And no, I don't think that's strange. You're just being obstinate. You complained about it being unprecedented, you were shown that it's not, and you're trying to find reasons to maintain your previous opinion regardless. Why even have a discussion, then?

Yes, you mentioned one moment, a moment and episode that I went back to watch again. Nothing that I saw in said episode compared with what we witnessed in Picard, in spite of your assertions to the contrary. The Enterprise spun in a circle, it didn't decide to fly like a fighter jet in Top Gun: Maverick. The whole scenario was ridiculous... that moment was just the icing on the cake.

The Beauty of Zero-G 3D space is that all sorts of maneuvering is possible if you have the right inputs, the right timing, the right manuevering thruster/anti-grav repulsor package, and the solid understanding of Newtonian Physics and how to apply it.

This is "DATA" we're talking about, the man is a computational / reflex / response time machine.

That was before he even got his upgraded "Synth Body" that was supposed to be a "Work of Art" when Geordi inspected it compared to original DATA's body.

Who knows how many technical enhancements went into the newly upgraded body.

Don't forget that Geordi LaForge, one of the greatest "Chief Engineers" of any generation had MANY years of free time to fix the Enterprise-D and potentially put in secret enhancements.

Plus the resources of StarFleet at his side.

This type of "Maze Running" flight pattern is straight up the wheel house of "DATA".

Even MORE reason to want to have a few Synths/Soong-Type Androids on EVERY single StarFleet ship.

Given "DATA's Service-Record" and what a "Synth" potentially can do when they're not hiding their capabilities but allowed to unleash it. There's ALOT that can be done.

It just looks ridiculous.
And I'm all for it =D

Lots of ridiculous flying happens IRL with the right pilot.

Same with driving.

The same Data who stood aside in Booby Trap and allowed Picard to helm the ship. We've never seen the Enterprise move like this before. It directly contradicts what our eyes have grown accustomed to for over half a century. You can't fill in the blanks and just accept it. And, beyond that, it looked appalling. So bad. Like really really bad.

I guess I have a different take and I'm perfectly fine with it, in-fact, I LOVE IT!

The events of Booby Trap must've opened up Data's mind as to what type of manueverability was possible.

Remember, JLP, a blood & flesh version manuevered the USS Enterprise out of that situation in "Booby Trap".

Imagine what a living Super Computer like DATA could pull of with full knowledge of what the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise can do.

Remember, a fully stocked USS Enterprise-D was designed to operate in space for several years w/o replinshment.

If this one incident burns through a giant chunk of the resources, that's a VERY SMALL PRICE to pay for winning.

So what, you burn through your resources; go back to SpaceDock and replenish ahead of schedule. Say that the dire events required you to burn through several years of fuel ahead of time.

If that means saving the UFP / StarFleet, I'm sure the UFP/StarFleet upper management can understand that critical situations require certain sacrificies, and using up several years worth of fuel / resources in one "Final Battle" to save UFP/StarFleet is chump change in comparison to what could've been lost.

And?

The threshold for realism and ridiculousness are not mutually exclusive.

Reality is filled with many ridiculous stunts/events/things that happen that shouldn't be possible.

Yet they do happen.

It's not out of the realm of plausibility that "A Living Super Computer" can maximize the manuever-ability of a Galaxy-class in a "Dire Situation" that is literally Do/Die.

Do you not see that you're filling in the gaps? It's awful writing. And I mean seriously awful. We've never seen the Enterprise move like this before (any ship in StarFleet for that matter) so why didn't Data just fly the Enterprise during TNG and do nothing else if he's that amazing at it? Anyway, forget about that part..... it just looked terrible. Diminished the majesty of the ship.

So what I’m seeing at this point in the thread is:

1. the E-D showing up was bad
2. But also, what it did it was too cool

This fanbase, man….

Especially in a universe where it’s established they use inertial dampening technology (and lots of other physics breaking tech).

It’s fine. More than fine! It was fun and exciting to see what modern production techniques can do for a classic and beloved ST ship. It was no more or less ridiculous than other space-based media. Remember that barrel roll at the end of Beyond?!?

Its movements looked terrible and its involvement was tagged on from the very start. Crap storytelling. Good luck
