Well, as I have never seen Star Wars, this sequence from The Last Generation was totally original to me. I have to say though that I will not be impressed if the George Lucas version of this space action scene is not as exciting as Terry and the VFX teams vision in Picard. I guess that Matalas has ruined the Star Wars ending for me now. The USS Enterprise D is quite simply better than the Millennium Falcon, and that SW ship would not have the same emotional ‘air fist pumping’ impact anyway.
"I've never watched it before but I know it's inferior. "

My wife has never seen any of the STAR WARS movies, either. It's why I never told her that sequence in the episode was similar to the Death Star run.

That being said, she does know multiple things about STAR WARS, so it proves that it has made a big impact on pop culture. Just like how STAR TREK has, since even people who've never seen an episode or movie know who Spock is or what a Klingon is or what a photon torpedo is.

You're comparing a masterpiece of cinema, done by the best FX house ever, to what we saw in Ep 10? Oh, right. You haven't seen it.

Related question: how is it that, in 2023, a science fiction fan hasn't seen Return of the Jedi?

This particular poster refuses to watch Star WARS for reasons that do not make sense to me.

@NCC-73515

I don't know about the German computer voice. But Riker had two voice actors: Detlef Bierstedt - Riker's standard voice and Tom Vogt (used for Tom Paris). Old Guinan had Regina Lemnitz - Whoopi Goldberg standard voice.... I´m glad they didn´t change Data/Soong.

The STAR WARS sequence in question predates the PICARD S3 sequence by 40 years. (You'll see it if you ever watch Return of the Jedi from 1983. ;))

I’ll wait for a cinema re release. If they can re release TMP and TWOK in the cinema then I am sure that they can do Star Wars on the big screen again too one day. Is there an anniversary coming up or anything like that? If Star Wars is as good as everyone says it is then I would rather watch it on a big cinema screen rather than my iPhone screen. :)

Star Wars did copy Star Trek first though, tbf, they took the word ‘Star’ and removed ‘Trek’, replacing it with ‘Wars’. Undoubtedly trying to ride on the success of TOS after Star Treks resurgence of popularity in the 1970’s.

The very post you quoted indicates ROTJ was released in 1983 -- 40 years ago.

That's right. Star Wars -- released in 1977 -- sought only to cash in on the success of TMP (release in 1979).

Yes. Star Trek was the first science fiction to use the word "star" in the title. Very astute.

Perfect. This could be my Star Wars year after all.

I meant cashing in on the success of Star Trek on television which was becoming a part of popular culture. Of course, Star Wars did well in the cinema because people probably thought that it was Star Trek at first. However, Star Wars making a load of money probably made Paramount Pictures want to produce a motion picture too?

No. That's a stupid assertion. "Oh, people are so dumb they just look at spaceships and go, 'Eh, must be that Star Track I've heard so much about.'"

Yes, yes it did. Phase 2 was in development hell, and Roddenberry was trying different pitches, back and forth from film to TV series back to film.

He had his heart set on The God Thing, didn’t he. Maybe this can be adapted for Seven of Nine’s new show or a streaming movie on Paramount+ like that time when they ran out of scripts and had to loot the Phase II archive and resort to a clip show in TNG season 1.

I mean, kind of. He just wanted to go forward and the studio wasn't so sure about it, especially since they would encounter the literal devil. Not exactly inspiring content. And Gene would even discourage Shatner with ST V's script idea because of that.

Seven of Nine and Jack can finish off Kirk’s job then, with the help of some legacy characters and cool ships. An epic battle of good versus evil that would unite the galaxy! They can call this great evil ‘The Dark Side’. :D

It wasn't just nitpicks though. This season fundamentally undid the core narrative aspects of both seasons 1 and 2:

Season 1 was fundamentally about Picard transitioning from a bitter old man who had shut everyone out to someone with purpose, direction, and a crew; along with saying goodbye to Data. The goodbye to data meant nothing - he was just a copy who was dismissed by the new Data. Shutting everyone out? He seemed happy enough to regale those cadets regarding his days in Starfleet even in the flashback. And the relationships we were introduced to (and were built) across Season 1 meant nothing to Picard in the long run. Even Raffi, who stayed in the series through the end, barely interacted with Picard this season.

Season 2 was about Picard facing down his childhood trauma and opening himself up to the possibility of a relationship with Laris, along with saying goodbye to Q. The promise of the relationship with Laris was never paid off, and Q's death is now rendered meaningless.

yeah this sums up a lot of my problems with season 3

Also I think new Trek shows need more characters that have diverse voices - that are critical or don’t jive with Starfleet. Not that starfleets bad, but it would have been a lot more interesting for me if Seven was a ranger instead of a Starfleet captain, for example.

While I don’t like that Data’s goodbye in season 1 was rendered somewhat meaningless, I did like how he overcame Lore.
