I wouldn't say tears exactly but my eyes were welling up the moment Spot appeared and Data began to talk about him so fondly. I felt like this is how he was going to die, sacrificing himself so that the sum of his experiences would end up merging with Lore into a new being, and him giving his happiest memories about a furry little ball of joy to his brother appeared to be a really fitting final goodbye before Data ended up surviving.

I really do think this would have been better. If instead of Data #3 there was a true amalgam of Data+Lore+the others.

As far as I seen, Matalas said once that there was a “nod” to Tasha. And there it was, exactly as described: a nod. It’s just that some took it to mean much more and have spent weeks going around in circles talking about Sela, alt-Yar, another daughter and all sorts of wild theories, blowing it completely out of proportion.

I like it just like that. It was nice and felt natural rather than crowbarred in. I don't want to see Sela again, but to see Yar is still one of Data's treasured memories was very sweet.

I never cry at things — at least, historically, and not since I was about 2 watching ET. I may have geared up at Tasha’s funeral, but I suspect I just didn’t blink enough and had hayfever, as in those days it happened that way — but in recent years, when things touch on specific things, particularly parenthood or the loss of parental figures, I am more likely to be ‘hit in the feels’. But I put this down to now being a father, and also having faced more loss in recent years. It is still fairly rare. The most recent thing to actually evoke a strong emotional response in this way was actually the Doc Martin Christmas Special.

This is me too in many ways. Though as a kid I did cry at the end of Terminator 2!

For me the moment with Spot and Data saying "he is the best of me" got the lump in the throat going. The biggest moment of actual misty eyed emotional intensity was actually in Episode 6 when Data was reactivated for the first time, looked over and went .."Geordi?"...."Captain?!"

The emotional moment for both Data and Geordi in that instant was subtle but very powerful

I do think it was odd how defenceless the Shrike suddenly was. It was a huge ship, and TBF we don't get a sense of how many crew she has... but she seems to have what, 20? 30? goons with her on the Titan. It seems odd that she left it nearly entirely unmanned. That was a bit contrived.

To be fair, the majority of the Shrike was the "wings". The actual central hull of the Shrike, not counting the deflector pod thingy..wasn't super huge.

20-25 seems to be the total crew of the Shrike, with about 15 having gone over to Titan and about 5 or 6 having previously been dusted

We know that there was more than one Spot.

(Spot changed gender.)

Data learning to pet his pet, probably went through 5 exploding Spots.

Spot was also a sexy love machine, who had not been fixed, so up to a point, Data had not replaced flesh and blood spot yet with a positronic Spot.

OK serious question, I've seen a few people say this season made them cry. Do you actually mean tears streaming down your face, even one tear? Or is it just an expression?

Since my dad's death I have cried at Star Trek, at the end of The Visitor and when Picard is with fake Rene in Generations. But that was more because it reminded me of real life.
Tears when I heard the "meow" and Data picks up Spot.

It just brought back so many memories of TNG from childhood.

But again, that just seems absurdly low! Given how ships work in this universe, it should have been in the hundreds.

What's new to the story since it started? Only change is Vadic is dead. Quite literally nothing has changed.

Not really? Ship crew counts have been going down as they become more modern and presumably more automated.

Given how ships work? Kirk and co operated the Enterprise in TSFS with a handful of them. The Titan itself has had most of its crew evacuated. We see entire ships ran automatically from the M5 to the Texas Class.

Right but those are always the exceptions not the rules. Normally a ship like the Titan (far smaller than the Shrike?) has hundreds of crew. Also, the Shrike gets into combat a lot so you presumably want a lot of bird-redshirts!

One weakness in the worldbuilding this year is... how many Changelings are there in the alpha quadrant? To take over Starfleet to the level shown you're presumably looking at hundreds or thousands. If it's just a few, then it's just a colossal coincidence that Tuvok was one of them. On a similar note, why has nobody mentioned the possibility of talking to the Great Link about all this?

I need to re-watch this episode, but I think the Shrike was destroyed too easily.

This is a Star Trek Movie in streaming-season form, so destroying the Shrike was going to happen, but it should've been harder.

Agreed. Was it explained why the Shrike's shields were down?

Also, was it ever explained who built this colossally powerful warship, or is everyone weirdly uninterested in that, like they were about the Scimitar?

The point of the Scimitar technical specs discussion in Nemsis was to make it clear the Enterprise was outmatched.

There's been lots of equally powerful ships to the Enterprise in TNG with no discussion as to how or why. The scrappers in Unification were said to have a ship that easily matched the firepower of a Galaxy class ship, yet after it exploded we never heard about it again.

Yeah that's true, but it's always a bit odd, since Starfleet and the Romulans especially seem to be in a bit of an arms race, but show no interest at all in these ships that seem to be made in a garage that easily outclass them.

Ok seriously, kind of disappointed with the episode, mostly because of the way changeling Vadic died. I mean we know from DS9 that changelings can exist in the vacuum of space. Doesn't anyone remember episode called Chimera when Odo encountered the other changeling flying through space? Also I remember Odo speaking about his origins and he himself being adrift in open space.

So why didn't she just gelatinize herself and survive being ejected into space? There's no explanation as to why she couldn't unless I missed something in this or an earlier episode.
