News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Bring it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying SNW and Picard, but it's nice to see something new on the horizon.

I'd like to see Trek expand into other genres, bring on Starfleet Academy, bring on a Risa 5-O, a Starfleet Temporal Investigations, a Law and Order: Utopia Planitia, NCIS Starfleet, Starfleet Medical, etc.

There is zero indication an Academy series must be set on Earth.

Honestly, I would prefer it if the rebuilt 32nd Century Federation were a bit less Earth-centric/Human-centric than the TOS/TNG era Federation.

Personally, I'd prefer if the new capital planet were something like Deneva -- a world with no native sapient species that became a Federation Member in its own right after colonists from many different UFP planets petitioned for Membership.

If it's not set on Earth? Awesome. Still doesn't change the fact that they'll be bound to the Academy and all that. Like I said, if not, great, but this just doesn't interest me all that much. I have been surprised in the past.

"Bound to the Academy?" What does that even mean?

Maybe I'm the only one now who read "Space Cadet" but people need to go read that book and realize that you can do a lot with this concept of training new officers for a space going organization that just "stuck at the Academy."

I've been pretty bummed out since Discovery's cancellation, and I was starting to get worried that new shows would just be vaudevillian greatest hits parades of "remember this guy" series and episodes. This announcement has gone a long way to make me feel excited about Trek again.
Yeah. It does feel like the news I needed after recent events even though it wouldn't have been my first choice.

There have been mad cries of "doom/failure" around ever since Disco started, but it was mostly noise. 2 shows ending without new replacements was the first time it felt like the studio were considering properly scaling back.

However, recent news of SNW and LDS renewals along with a new show certainly alleviates that.

Every time they bring this series idea out, since the 80s, it's set AT the Academy. There was nothing in there that tells me otherwise. When we visited the Academy in TNG they're running around pretty much at the Academy and in Sol system. Wrath of Khan they were on a training cruise gone wrong, so maybe there's something there?

I'm all for this being good, but I just don't see it and it isn't what I've been interested in for a Star Trek show. I'm happy you're thinking outside the box with it. I'm just not at the moment. I'll be more excited, maybe, when we see something more beyond the announcement.

It’s two years before the series airs so today I’m pretty luke warm on the news. Hopefully in time I will be excited but I’ve never been that excited for an academy series.

It's always great to hear about new Trek, I am a little concerned that this could easily morph into a teen/young-adult soap opera.

*I'm still REALLY hopeful for Star Trek Legacy.

I'm not though. Space Cadet, the novel by Heinlein, was a partial inspiration for Star Trek, in some ways. So, this isn't "outside the box." This is "back to the roots."

I was always under the impression it was Horatio Hornblower and Forbidden Planet that inspired Trek. I like Heinlein so I'll check out Space Cadet.

I'll let you get excited over this. I'm out until we see footage.

I'm not excited. I'm surprised and cautiously optimistic.

However, I'm not one to think it's bound in to a box just because it's "the Academy."

It'd be interesting to see a poll about this news, to find out how much enthusiam there is about a Starfleet Academy series set in the 32nd century.

Starfleet Academy has been floating around as an idea for as long as I can remember, so I've had plenty of time to get comfortable in how disinterested I am. Though they were threatening to make a series set after the fall of the Federation as well, and when that finally happened it wasn't as bad as I expected, so I could always be surprised. I'm definitely surprised that the Starfleet Academy series ended up being set after the fall of the Federation series, so I got both ideas in the same package.

A poll where? There will inevitably be some polls about it on YT. I'll be looking at those channels that have near 1M subs with lots of engagement.

My prediction, there isn't much enthusiasm or demand for this.

Any poll would be self selected and biased in one form or another.

I don't imagine any enthusiasm could be gauged accurately because we have limited information. This thread already demonstrates there are a lot of assumptions, positive and negative, around an Academy series. Any enthusiasm is likely based on preconceived notions.
The leaked news many many months ago which this seems to confirm had the academy series set in the 32nd century on "new Earth"
And?

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.
