From the music cues, to the ships and accompanying dialogue, to the displays, to Encounter at Farpoint clips, to Moriarty, to Data/B4/Lore...it was too much for me as a long-time fan, let alone those less keen on the franchise (my partner, who has enjoyed the series so far, hated this episode.)
1. required to figure out if it's real riker or changeling
2. where else do you grab geordi if not where he works? where else do you get a cloaking device?
3. why would an archive storage facility have no displays?
4. not everyone will remember what the tune means
5. see 1.
6. a new interesting character, multiple personalities, what's the problem?

I'll bet everyone missed this top secret piece at Daystrom Station...

because it wasn't visible

I liked "Relics". And I'm sorry, but a guy from 1948 walking right into a workplace in 2023 and acting like he can pick up like it's the next day would be treated the same way. They'd be patient with him, but the patience can only go so far.

I love Relics. I'm surprised it's getting dumped on. It works metatextually as well. Think how TNG initially seemed to distance itself from TOS before learning to embrace it.

It's a great episode.

For you, and some other posters. For myself and another group of posters, it did nothing of the sort. To each their own. One person's excessive "fanservice" is another's really enjoyable blast from the past. No one's right or wrong here.

Well...yeah, that goes without saying, and nobody is asserting otherwise.

Same goes for pretty much every other criticism or praise which could be made of any episode; it'd be rather unwieldy to have to state that in every post.

The only "fan service" (uhg:rolleyes:) in season 3 so far that I thought was unnecessary or gratuitous was the inclusion of the Moriarty hologram.
I always figured Moriarty would eventually show back up. That one didn't seem to out of place. I wasn't keen on the whole reunion season, but since they're having it, they might as well embrace the whole thing big time. Time to bring in the Ligonians as well. Embrace it all.

I would have strongly preferred it be the actual Moriarty program held within Reg Barclay's perpetual simulation cube but for what it was and how it helped identify the existence of the new Data golem it was passable.

It's a nice "Easter Egg" in that way.

TBH it might've been more fun that it was Moriarty as the manifest. His whole thing being "For god's sake take me away from here they're using my intellect, my brilliance as a grocery list."

Like, I love Brent. I do.

I'm a bit sick of seeing him play some flavour of the Soong Androids. I think having him back as Altan Inigo Soong as a character would've been way better. Self-described "Mad Scentists" are rarely such in reality.

Was Riker's identity in question?

Geordi being there was a surprise to Picard. They could have found one elsewhere.
Because its a warehouse not a museum?

He went there to get Geordis help (taking out a transponder, which revealed all current ships are networked) not to steal a cloak. That was Jack and Syd who made it as a back up solution, and it allowed them to come together as characters. Picard was not surprised by Geordi being there — it’s why he was there.

It’s both a warehouse and a museum… hence being called an archive, and the entrance behaves like a welcome zone for visiting researchers. It’s like the British Library of weird alien space stuff. Or even the British Museum, but without a gift shop. That we are aware of.

If you stripped all of the "fan service" elements out (e.g., the displays inside the Daystrom Station, the museum, Moriarty, etc.), the story of the episode would remain essentially unchanged.
  • A heist to find info from Daystrom.
  • Riker leads a squad to get the info but finds an old friend.
  • They get stuck and the Titan has to run.
  • Picard and crew have to find a place to hide, regroup, and plan to save the away team.
  • They get help from an old friend.
  • They save Worf and Rafi, they find a new version of Data (kinda), but Riker is left behind, and they find out the Changelings have Picard's body.
With the exception of using the cloak from the Voyage Home Bird of Prey, almost none of the episode's story is dependent on fan service. All of what's being called fan service peppers the background of the episode, and allows for some character moments (e.g., Seven reminiscing about Voyager, which connects to the "found family" theme of the season).

You haven't seen the entire story yet, so you don't know what's "fan service" or hints.

Just speculation. There was another body seen but you couldn’t make out who it is.

Yes you could. It said: "Arrtetan Android" Not Archer
