We agree! But all or at least most of that character work is dependent upon the characters’ positions as preexisting in the canon. You could tell similar stories with new people but it resonates more with the audience because we “know” them.
For me, and only me, and no judgement, but that conversation would resonate with me no matter who had it.

Character history is different than "Hey look a tribble"

Indeed and it's what people are talking about. It's dominating the conversation, aside from the usual criticism of tech being wrong, or the villain being stupid.

We’re just going in circles now. I wish for all of us that we enjoy the remaining episodes. I am optimistic but fearful the wheels will come off because the villain will be stupid/their plan too complicated to make any sense. But if that’s the case we can bitch about it together.

We're discussing a 50 year old franchise. Do people expect to change minds?

Too much effort to call back to past Star Trek to the point that it distracted from a story which was hereto interesting - it felt like the story was servicing the callbacks, rather than the other way around.

References and links as part of a story are fine, and past episodes/seasons have had plenty which I've not been bothered by, but they took over this episode.
If you stripped all of the "fan service" elements out (e.g., the displays inside the Daystrom Station, the museum, Moriarty, etc.), the story of the episode would remain essentially unchanged.
  • A heist to find info from Daystrom.
  • Riker leads a squad to get the info but finds an old friend.
  • They get stuck and the Titan has to run.
  • Picard and crew have to find a place to hide, regroup, and plan to save the away team.
  • They get help from an old friend.
  • They save Worf and Rafi, they find a new version of Data (kinda), but Riker is left behind, and they find out the Changelings have Picard's body.
With the exception of using the cloak from the Voyage Home Bird of Prey, almost none of the episode's story is dependent on fan service. All of what's being called fan service peppers the background of the episode, and allows for some character moments (e.g., Seven reminiscing about Voyager, which connects to the "found family" theme of the season).

It never ceases to amaze me how people can watch the exact same things and have completely different viewpoints / arrive at completely different conclusions. It's almost as though people enjoy different things or something extraordinary like that. Who knew?

For you, and some other posters. For myself and another group of posters, it did nothing of the sort. To each their own. One person's excessive "fanservice" is another's really enjoyable blast from the past. No one's right or wrong here.

I love the assumption that I haven't found enjoyment.
However many times I read @El Maestro's post, I cannot find any such statement or implication. It's one thing to disagree with someone; it's another to put words in their mouth. (Or on their keyboard. ;))

Well, if I misunderstood the below...
Except there’s a contingent here that seems to suggest that the “fan service” is substandard and ruining the show, and keep mentioning it when others who do not feel that way are enjoying it, often dismissively and judgmentally. Like people are Trekking wrong.
...I apologize.

However, as I noted, I'm used to being wrong in my Trek opinion. Being a TOS fan in a TNG era in my school was interesting. I got used to being wrong.
