If you want something new, then a show designed to revisit one of the most popular legacy characters is a weird place to look.
It's almost like if you want something with less Star Trek, you might watch something that's not Star Trek. And you can have your cake and eat it too. Some ST, some non-ST.

I hardly watch any TV at all. But even I have a nice mix. ST plus say Doctor Who, The Expanse or New BSG, etc.

You fan your way, I'll fan mine.

Except there’s a contingent here that seems to suggest that the “fan service” is substandard and ruining the show, and keep mentioning it when others who do not feel that way are enjoying it, often dismissively and judgmentally. Like people are Trekking wrong.

I have been a member of this board since before (edit: Two weeks after) 9/11 and I have never done that to anyone, even when ENT was not exactly lighting it up in its first few seasons and yet some loved it.

That has been my Trek experience. I've been wrong since I was 8.

I guess I'll be wrong again. Par for the course.

Production team tries to chart a new direction and update the visuals, sets, and general aesthetics....

Star Trek fans: THIS DOESN'T MATCH WHAT WE'VE SEEN BEFORE!!!

Production team tries to meticulously connect the story to previous events, settings, and characters....

Star Trek fans: THEY'RE USING TOO MUCH OLD NOSTALGIA!

I mean they can't win for losing with this stuff lol!
The Hell with them is my opinion. They're actively looking for ways to get faux-upset. The last several pages have made for some ridiculous reading.

Look I’m trying to talk in good faith here but you cannot expect me to believe that ep 3x06 was thematically barren with no character development.
I never said it was. In fact I just finished rewatching it a few minutes ago. Good stuff between Jack and Jean-Luc. Fun back and forth between Riker and Worf. Geordi realizing he was an overprotective father. All nice character work.

Indeed. Excellent use of characters acknowledging and celebrating their differences and similarities. I smiled broadly when the fathers hollered for their kids. Good momment.

Too much Star Trek in your Star Trek

Too much effort to call back to past Star Trek to the point that it distracted from a story which was hereto interesting - it felt like the story was servicing the callbacks, rather than the other way around.

References and links as part of a story are fine, and past episodes/seasons have had plenty which I've not been bothered by, but they took over this episode.

We agree! But all or at least most of that character work is dependent upon the characters’ positions as preexisting in the canon. You could tell similar stories with new people but it resonates more with the audience because we “know” them.

Indeed and it's what people are talking about. It's dominating the conversation, aside from the usual criticism of tech being wrong, or the villain being stupid.
