I've accepted this season will have a ton of fan service since it's the last hurrah and a love letter to 90s Star Trek fans. The main downside is how cartoonish Vadic is. They could have toned it down.

I know some of the snobbier fans want their Trek to be a continuous series of IFC indie films with a Jim Jarmusch feel and as few callbacks as possible because they're not "THAT type of fan" but Star Trek started doing references and callbacks to earlier stories as soon as, well, 1967. Continuity and reminding viewers what came before is just what Star Trek is. Demanding stories be "original and not fanwank" is a fruitless request and frankly one of the more obnoxious requests we as a fanbase have.

I think there’s a fine line between a decent amount of fan service and smothering you in it. This one (and episode 1) hurdled way past that line. 2-5 did a pretty good job minding the line, only occasionally crossing over.

But to each his own, of course.

I always forget that Cochrane in FC had a circular belt buckle. Hunh.

Guess you could say his first warp flight was one notch up on the rest.

Everyone was talking about Kirks body being stored at Daystrom and I missed that scene. Why did they have to go screw up Picards fitting burial like that. Seems kind of morbid.
