Discovery ending with Season 5

Paramount will not totally abandon Star Trek, as it's still the biggest franchise it has other than maybe Yellowstone - and thus the biggest single draw to their service. It would be like Disney deciding to abandon Star Wars because most of the recent stuff has been lackluster.

Cut back? Sure. But actually ceasing to make any new Trek content is signing their death warrant, hastening the day it's bought out by Amazon or something.

There is a significant audience for this stuff out there thanks to Star Trek 2009. It reinvigorated the franchise for a younger generation.

Even though the JJ movies lost their momentum by 2016, if even a fraction of that movie audience tunes in and pays for the TV shows.. it justifies the investment.

Neither would surprise me.

Regardless, my point stands. If Trek fails to make money then it will be shelved, regardless of what fans crow about.

justifies the investment.
Not in the current economic environment.

I guess I have a bit more faith, if not a ton, in how things will pan out. Strange New Worlds will continue for a few years. Another live-action show will get greenlit... in a few years. That about sums it up for this era.
That's my take. We'll have more Trek after 2027, but we'll be moving into 4th Generation Trek and whatever that will be.

Oh I'm still happy STD is cancelled. The 32nd century is pretty boring.
Then you miss the point.

Star Trek fans are too myopic, to self-focused, and fail to recognize that the studio looks at Trek differently than fans. They look for money produced, and if one part of a brand starts failing it is taken as a reflection of the whole brand.

There's a saying that I would use when I used to coach tennis; "if I win we win; if we win I win."
Star Trek fans would do well to realize this or the bell will toll for the franchise because we're to busy fighting amongst ourselves over petty reasons.

The schadenfreude over Discovery's cancelation.

I'm only concerned about the quality of Trek. If a stinker show is going to be cancelled I am all for it. I'd Paramount decides to cancel the rest so be it. I'll be sad but ill be also happy that a bad trek is no longer causing damage to the franchise. I can wait if it takes a few years for more quality trek.

The lack of sympathy continues to astound.

Sure I have. I just don't agree.

Don't take disagreement as a lack of sympathy. Any more then I would wish your favorite show canceled even if I can't stand it.

Trek fans should learn some teamwork despite differences of opinion.

Well at least we agree on TOS.
