You have never put on a brave face for people, ever? Never faked it for a friend? Ever?

Seriously, I swear people think the human mood state is one continuous stream and never fascilates or is faked by people in certain situations. I cannot be the only one, can I? :wtf:

I love how this is the only marker for something being bad for you-did you become violent? WTF?

I'm not denying the medicinal benefits of cannabis, but I don't for once believe it is not a dangerous substance, just like all other substances can be dangerous. Not in the ways that "reefer madness" believed, but risk of schizophrenia increases, struggles with anxiety and avoidance with use, etc.

I've seen both sides of this equation. Regardless, the stoner culture is something that needs to die out.
Wow. Twice in one day.

I mean, I totally love how you dig out one sentence in my entire post and use that to defend your position.

Wow. I guess all those experiences with adults using marijuana as clients were completely made up then?

ETA: Ok, dialing back my snark a bit. Bearing in mind that I work with people who are struggling with mental illness and addiction, my experiences are probably less than average. However, I have done my research and while marijuana is not the danger like reefer madness it still has risks, as do all substances. Caffeine use has risks, so does nicotine. Let's not pretend substance use is just harmless.

16 year olds in the UK can go into pubs (while accompanied by an adult, I think) and have a drink today. I doubt Los Angeles will be following US drinking laws by the 2390s.

At 16 there were plenty of us sneakng into them without one - no doubt Jack would have managed to slip by the doorman/maybe rules during the day are more relaxed (plenty of places here where you can come in until 8pm/9pm if underage)/or maybe as you say the laws will have changed by then.

The reason Jack disappeared wasn't because because he was angered by Picard's response. Guinan caught him being there underage and had her Brikar bouncer rough him up and then some. Picard had a laugh at this while walking out after lunch and Jack swore he'd never associate with such a jerk like his father and his ruthless associate Guinan.

I haven’t smoked weed in 20 years. Id say that I tried it but I was not a regular smoker. I had experiences that went from no effect, to chilled out to freaking out. There was a pretty bad freak out session that made me stop. Suffering from some anxiety, I wouldn’t mind trying it again but I’m not in a place in my life (two kids under the age of five) where I feel that would be appropriate.

Well, at age 23 he looks like he's 35, so I'm sure it was pretty easy to get past the bouncer as a teen.

Do you get to attend the academy at 16?

Who knows. But Shaw called himself a 'grease monkey' which implies that he was an enlisted technician at Wolf 359. He could have attended the academy later and worked his way up the ranks. Wolf 359 is a long time ago from where the show is now.

Alcoholic beverages are normally being consumed for their taste, marijuana is being consumed to get high ... which in my mind puts it right in league with any other drug.

I'd like to introduce you to Smirnoff Vodka, Blue WKD, Fosters, Carling, and Tenants Super, none of which have every been praised for their taste, and all of which have got me leathered more than once just for the sake of getting leathered.

Can't speak to anywhere else but I'd say the % in UK who drink for the taste is pretty damn low

Or he could've just been an ensign who got hands-on with the ship mechanics. I don't remember if he said he was an engineer or was just in engineering but usually (as a licensed engineer myself) people don't usually call themselves an engineer until they've gotten an engineering degree.

Also for what it's worth Kelvin Chekov was a commissioned officer with the rank of ensign at 17, meaning he started Academy at 13 (14 if he was a whiz kid who finished in 3 years). For what it's worth Todd Stashwick's real life age as of filming (meaningless I know with the casting of Ed Speleers as Jack but whatever), Shaw would've been 20 as of the Battle of Wolf 359.

The one thing I find pretty amusing:
This is essentially a TOS movie, with the TNG cast.

Now, I did like the TOS movies a lot more than the TNG movies (or the nuTrek movies).

But still it's pretty weird a spin- off of TNG feels nothing like TNG or the TNG movies, but goes full 80s TOS movie
Terry's favourite movies were the TOS ones.

They seem to be ignoring the Nexus fantasy Picard had of a family life in Generations certainly in their portrayal of Picard. And Insurrection would've been a useful explanation for Beverly's senior fertility, or even a reference to Riker taking Thad there to try to cure him, but that's ignored too.

Crusher: I wanted him to know you, but then refugees from Kalara V, angry about Romulan relocation, kidnapped you and held you for nine days. Then I tried again, but this time two Reman assassins intercepted the ship in the Donatra sector and held a disruptor to your head. Then only days later, Starfleet asked you to negotiate with the praetor and a photon grenade detonates meters from you.

Although they have no problem in referencing Nemesis by having Crusher taking the understandable chaos after Picard killed Romulan praetor Shinzon out of context to justify hiding Jack from him.

It's possible to have an engineering degree before enlisting in starfleet. Plenty of enlisted personnel in today's military have advanced degrees they earned either during their enlistment or before enlisting. There is a requirement (in the US military) for officers to have a college degree, but nothing preventing someone with a degree from enlisting.

The same 'verse where cadets get spot-promoted to captain. Yeah, we can skip the whole JJ-verse on this issue, AFAIC.
