Apologies if this has already been discussed, but it seems odd that Riker is having this emotional crisis about Thad and separating from his family now, when two or more years ago on Nepenthe he seemed saddened but well-adjusted about it, and that already several years after Thad’s death.
Never had something trigger a painful memory or a trauma memory?

I did like the Farpoint references. The first time the characters have mentioned that first mission by name since, I believe, Data and Geordi in GEN.
Memory Alpha put his death anywhere between 2386 and 2399. Assuming he died just before 2399, Riker and Troi may have been putting on a show when Picard visited and they've been fighting continuously in the 2 years spanning 2399 to 2401 when Riker just decided to leave.
They knew immediately, but still, when possibly disintegrating a close friend, you'd better be 100% sure.

At the end of TOS S1 City on the Edge of Forever , and that word was not said on Prime Time TV in 1967. He really had to fight standards and practices for it, but they allowed it after seeing the episode in context.
I liked that the crew was finally working together, but hate that it took 4 episodes and a pointless diversion to get there.
They also decided not to do Raffi/Worf stuff at all, which makes me wonder why they didn't just separate those two storylines from the very beginning and have single episodes devoted to each.
Also, I did find it amusing that they basically said S2 doesn't count.

There is a discontinuity when we talk about Picard's relationship to Starfleet.
2396 he said in that bar that Starfleet is his only family.
2399 he told Rios when they first met aboard the La Sirena that he separated himself from Starfleet long ago in every possible way.

Yup. Pretty cool. Also the creatures looked a bit like the farpoint station aliens. Pretty cool.
Yep. That last line was forced in solely to add angst to Picard and Jack, regardless of how incongruent it was with Picard's status at the time. He realistically would've just said he now lives with his dog and housekeepers, etc.
Well, he was pandering to his groupies. But yeah, in context it makes no sense. It's almost like season 1 & 2 never happened...
Don't officers go back to the academy later in their careers for further training?
Ro went for tactical training, Saavik was already a Lieutenant but was doing further command training.
Easy solution is Lt. JG Picard going back to the academy for further training and meeting Jack there. When Jack graduated, he joined Jean-Luc on the Stargazer.
Agreed. At 18 seconds he pulls off a reverse Riker maneuver. Pretty impressive. That one might be a bit complicated but I still think he can do the forward one. LolA REAL RIKER WOULD AT LEAST TRY.
Jack's history can fit as is. There's nothing in existing canon contradicting it. It's just the actor they cast in TNG and the only mention being service aboard the Stargazer under Picard as well as his marriage to Beverly who's established as much younger than Picard led us to believe he's much younger than it seems he actually was.
It IS glaring that he's not mentioned in Tapestry. But it's still not a hardcore contradiction
Kirk was a Lieutenant teaching a class attended by Gary Mitchell, though that timeline of events seems to indicate that Kirk was such a badass at the Academy he was already an Ensign and then a Lieutenant before he even graduated in 2254.
Yeah true. There's also Walker Keel who seems more contemporary with Picard than Bev. So maybe she just hung around with these older men.
I believe that's called a dialectic. Humans are quite capable of these.
I too was a little confused about Riker's Crisis and Nepenthe. It feels like this season is trying to forget about the first season other than Picard being a synthetic. I really liked Frake's acting in this scene though, but he was happier in Season 1.
