So is Capt Shaw the new, reigning biggest a##hole in Trek?

Yeah, that's probably more likely. Shaw does look a bit young to have served at Wolf 359. That was, what, 40 years ago, Trek time?
Going by Todd Stashwick's real life age and Wolf 359 taking place 34 years ago as of Picard S3, Shaw would've been around 20 at the time.

Or, more likely I think, he was on one of the ships during First Contact. A lot of ships got destroyed there too. And that would have only been about 25 years ago, Trek time.

But of course, I aldo think no one really needs much of an excuse to have an anti-Borg prejudice. Kind of like i don't have to have personal experience with the Nazis to be anti-Nazi.

The theory is the constellation class in the end credits animation is connected to him. The stardate on the report is from Best of Both Worlds

Are legal name-changes not a thing in the Federation? A Captain will call someone whatever name in on their file, so that would take care of that. Also, I think that the Award for Reigning A-Hole in Starfleet should be called "The Stocker Award".

Todd Stashwick put it best on the cruise:

In a TNG ep, if some old admiral came on the Enterprise and told Picard he wanted to pull the ship off course for clearly ulterior motives, and then Riker went behind Picard's back and did what the Admiral had asked anyway, we'd all be super pissed at nameless Admiral and also at Riker. But because it's Picard vs. New Guy Shaw, the fans think Shaw is an asshole for seeing through Picard's lame lies. But honestly, he's quickly become one of my fave captains ever.

Well said!!

he’s really not wrong, honorable goal or not Picard is totally the badmiral in this situation.

Like I said, it seems obvious that Shaw has personally suffered trauma due to the Borg. Most likely it has something to do with the Constance (end credits). So the most logical alternative is that Shaw served on the Constance at Wolf 359, was probably one of the only survivors, and THAT's the reason he doesn't like the Borg and insists that Seven use her real name.

The only thing we don't know is why Shaw personally requested Seven as his XO. I do NOT think he's deliberately trying to make her fail (as some have suggested)...

maybe having Seven..er…Commander Hansen…there is part of his therapy. A confront your fear, hate, whatever sorta thing.

And she's one hell of a soldier.

She recaptured Jack Crusher. She stopped the etherium (?) leak. She saved Jack's life.

Give her time and she'll find the saboteur too. :techman:

Shaw is old enough to have served as an ensign on a ship at both Wolf-359 or during the battle in FC. It is even possible that the Consitution that was at Wolf-359 could have been a training ship he happened to be on and was called in because of how desperate the situation was.

I'm wondering if Captain Shaw's ex-Borg prejudice extends to Janeway, Tuvok, and Torres who, unlike Picard and Seven, willingly got assimilated in some bizarre plot to infiltrate the Borg from within or whatever on Voyager

I like Shaw. I’d watch a Shaw series aboard the Titan-A. Shaw is more interesting to me than the new take on Seven as a character, quite frankly. I hope they don’t sideline him for the season.
100% agree. I told Todd i hope and pray they haven't already killed him off so that we potentially have him for a spinoff. If they can do it for Pike...
I'd watch the hell out of a Titan show with Shaw as captain and Seven as XO. I don't want to see Seven as captain yet, Id prefer to see her grow into the role like we saw with Riker over the course of TNG. Done right, Seven could have O'Brien / Worf levels of character development by the time Jeri Ryan is done.

His relatively new XO refuses to use her human name,
Which is her right to do, and quite frankly it is both surprising and appalling that Starfleet apparently has no policy against deadnaming, as most respectable workplaces of today do. Or does this season's attempt to recreate 1990s Star Trek mean we're also going back into a 1990s mentality on such matters?

Did Shaw actually request Seven to be his XO, or was she assigned against his wishes or at least without him being consulted?

IIRC, Matalas said Shaw specifically requested Seven.

I really think it's a bad idea to equate trans issues with assimilation, which is consistently portrayed as an assault that leaves deep trauma in its victims. This isn't dead naming, it's something else, and while it would be worth exploring from a character standpoint, it's disingenuous to refer to it as deadnaming.

She's gone from being a Borg POW on Voyager to being an XO on Titan.

Kirk went from being a cadet to being named Captain of the Enterprise. Why the beef against Seven?

I'd hate to see her only become Captain in the final episode of a spinoff (Burnham was Captain for a single season. After that, her show was cancelled!)

Trans persons aren't the only people have dead names.

And people also disliked Kirk going from Cadet to captain. Seven isn't being singled out.

Respecting a person's chosen name is important whether it's a trans issue or not. I still remember all of the hatred that Katherine Pulaski got all the way back in the '80s for mispronouncing Data's name and then being flip about it instead of apologizing.
