Is Titan-A a refit of original Titan?

Technically, Picard and Riker are on a ship that isn't theirs. They're "borrowing" it. It's not theirs. So I see the argument of the TNG characters having no connection to the ship (other than it's called "the Titan") as a non-starter. The fact that it's not their ship and not what we associate with their ship is the whole point.

The whole point is that the only way they could get a ship to “borrow” was that Riker had a personal connection to it. This is Schrödinger’s character beat, is it? Picard and Riker are so out of the loop that they have no ship of their own, except this ship where Riker’s personal connection is so strong he can just tag along for a joyride whenever he feels like it, but he has no connection to it because the characters’ day is over and they’re on their own and have no resources, and so on. It’s his old ship and not his old ship at the same time.

If they say the Titan-A is a refit, then it's a refit. I mean, it looks like they refit it backwards, going from more advanced to less advanced, but then maybe it's one of those trends where people like the older aesthetic of past starships. Who knows? Humans love that kind of thing.

It’s exactly that according to Terry

Season 3 is set in 2401 for the 150th anniversary of the NX-01’s launch. That might not be an official shirt.

But, for whatever reason, maybe information from the previous Titan was transferred over to the new one. So it's like "same ship, different body". It's like transferring all your information from one cellphone to the next.

I think it's dumb, but that's the only way it works in my head. It's the only way Shaw saying he had to purge all of Riker's jazz from the computer makes sense to me.

This was brought up in the comic series Countdown to Darkness. In that Robert April (Kelvin) had programmed some protocols into his Enterprises computer (an Enterprise that doesn’t exist in the prime universe between NX-01 and NCC-1701).

His protocols were then transferred into tge NCC 1701s computer for some reason tk allow him to use them.

Ymmv, but personally I'll avoid the kinds of mental gymnastics everyone in here is using to try and justify what was simply a dumb idea driven by Matalas' obsession with TWOK-era Trek...

This silly "refit" idea - and the whole notion of starship designers covering a brand new design in century-old anachronistic technological features - can go into the same bin as the ridiculous turboshaft deck numbers in STV:TFF, nucleonic synth cloning, Shinzon's squeaky outfit, that rickety bridge in the opening credits to Insurrection, and the amphibious critters Janeway and Paris turned into in Threshold.

So, the idea was that after the Luna class’s legacy run with Riker, that ship was damaged and retired. Some of the systems were refit and put into this new Titan, the Titan-A.

The entire ship wasn't turned into the Titan-A, it just reused some parts from the original.

LMAO, that's not a "refit", that's recycling salvaged components; something Starfleet was already doing for decades with their mothballed vessels stored in depots like the one at Qualor >insert number here<

Honestly I feel like a lot of these weird decisions he's made are simply rooted in his obsession with TWOK-TUC-era Trek. Misusing (and frankly, abusing) Bill Krause's gorgeous original Shangri La design was simply the closest Matalas could get to sticking Picard and co. on the Enterprise refit LOL

Paramount shoulda just let him create his own TWOK-era show, in exchange for not filling PIC with bizarre anachronisms... I for one would happily watch that.

My preference too. Or, come to think of it, a two-nacelle companion design i.e. neo-Stargazer nacelles (which they went with anyway), same saucer section, but a new engineering hull and neck. Could have been a cool callback to the TMP Enterprise without being as on-the-nose retro as what we got.

Honestly, given the choice (and a Q-esque click of the fingers!) I'd disappear almost everything that was "designed" from First Contact onwards, anyway...

When it comes to the term 'refit' I would imagine the existing ship design is improved upon (aka, remains the same class, but can otherwise undergo structural and internal changes to accommodate for modern hardware/technologies, etc.).

In this sense, the original Titan being drammatically reconfigured into a Neo Constitution class is unlikely (basically, turning from one class into another) doesn't go with the term 'refit'... its an outright ship swap.
Huge structural changes that drammatically affec the look of the whole ship wouldn't happen so fast most likely.

Had the original Titan been refitted, it would have retained most of its original design/shape (given its only been 20 odd years) with maybe some minor external changes, and there would have been no 'A' addition (this would have only occurred had the original been destroyed and the 'A' was a new build).... but overal design would remain largely the same.

In the show, its clearly stated the Titan - A is a Neo Constitution class (aka a completely new ship and design - redesigned Constitution class for the 25th century).
They may have transferred over the previous ship's logs and databases though (from the original Titan). That would explain the initial dialogue in ep. 1 talking about the ship as if its the same (when it clearly isn't).

In the case of the Stargazer refit we saw in Pic s2... that actually works as a Constellation refit.
It would also explain lack of additional letter (such as 'A')... but for some reason, the ship isn't sporting the original Stargazer NCC number.
It would make more sense if SF retained the original NCC numbers and stated the Constellation underwent a massive design overhaul for the 25th century because of changes in technology that occurred in the late 24th century and integration of Borg tech too... plus, enough time passed for this to have happened.

But alas... no.

The Titan-A is a Neo Constitution class (a new design and new) starship.
Doesn't seem terribly advanced though.

Eh, I just split the difference and prefer to think the Titan-A features some components of the original (some salvaged internal spaceframe members, external hull plates, and computer core files), but otherwise is a new ship. Maybe she contains 15% or less recycled parts of the original, but is still very much Neo-Constitution in design.
