Ah, that's reassuring indeed! Thanks for looking that up.

    Oops.

Well, the point still stands. :p

You know, I had been getting suspicious about all the NK talk at the beginning of the season, and then when they brought it up again here during the episode I had a feeling it was gonna end the way it did.

Yeah, he was Dem House leader at the time (in real world).

Edit: checked the footage. The actor even looks like Gephardt. Oh, hey, about that ending........

What are your thoughts/theories/predictions on the finale?

I'm still in disbelief they actually went there with the "unmanned" probe lol.
Makes the other plot points seem small.
    • the incident at NASA (keycard, stolen statue, leaked set "rubble" photos)
    • the Aleida/Margo-Spy/FBI thing
    • the POTUS coming out/husband lying political fallout
    • the Martian standoff
    • the Martians "return" to Earth
    • the Martian (Baby)

"main" characters that I think are safe for season 4:
    • Danielle Poole
    • Tyler
    • Kelly
    • Aleida
    • Karen
could go either way (not all will make it for sure)
    • Ed
    • Ellen
    • Margo
    • Dev
    • Danny
    • Jimmy

Kim Il Sung died in 1994 (in our timeline) so he may have been the one authorizing this even if he didn't live to see it to conclusion.

Still crazy to think they popped likely (one dude) into that small thing and sent them to Mars with basically no way back. It's possible they intended to try to contact the Russians, but the Russian ship not making it there and the crew joining up with the Americans may have stopped it.

Also possible they just sent the guy there (possibly more than one since there is another probe that landed) to die on Mars.

I think this actually means North Korea beat everyone to Mars. There was a news report in the show that said a North Korean probe was going to reach Mars like a week before Helios and the other teams. I think that North Korean guy may have been the foot we saw stepping onto Mars at the end of season 2.

Somehow the Bill / Aleida rift in this latest episodes was one of the saddest things of the show so far for me. I absolutely adore(d) their dynamic, and it's a shame it's likely over.

Yea... I kept waiting for the writers to 'salvage' the situation and have Bill talk about how NASA is always being investigated and if Alaida doesn't come forward she could find herself with culpability and be charged in the future.

I noticed in the subtitles they spelled Kyiv that way. Nice.

Alongside him - the moment she has shown him her evidence and he was able to examine it and come to the same conclusion he was culpable as well.

Awesome episode, even the Danny parts didn't suck as much this time ;)

If only our politicians had the courage and strength to speak so open i might gain respect. Very bold move on the side of Ellen - politically she is safe i believe, her sexual orientation is not something the law specifies so she didn't lie in the legal sense during the steps to become president. Public opinion though is a whole different matter but this reveal might be the jumpstart to put the LGBQ movement in that reality forward a couple of decades.

That NK probe looks so small - how can anyone physically ( much less mentally) survive the months of space travel without being able to stretch and even relax a little? Poor North Korean, he must be out of his mind.

Yea, I didn't consider that as well... Basically if something is discovered (or leaks continued) the ones who failed to report it could be charged which would include Bill after being brought into the loop.

I'm not sure where the Ellen thing is going just because I'm not sure how much of the finale is going to go into the politics. If this happened like mid-season I would have had more speculation. Possibly the ultra right-wing VP of hers trying to invoke the 25th amendment, maybe he resigns himself... I think we're probably staying in 1995 so the fate of the 1996 election and everything after won't likely be known until S4.

I agree with you on the NK probe. As surprising the reveal was I'm just trying to figure out how someone survived in there for like 4 to 6 months. I'm going to assume what we saw on the ground is probably the 'lander module' and that there was a larger part that it was connected to which held food and oxygen. What we saw on Mars is probably enough to get to the moon, but definitely would need a large supply attachment for the months long trip to Mars.

As to the astronaut... Dude may not have had much of a choice. We're talking bout North Korea. lol

It was a NK copied Soyuz capsule, probably modified for the mars journey.

What I find odd is the idea that the Soviets would not be aware of the North Korean being there. In our reality, the Soviets and NK's had a good relationship until the fall of the Soviets. So you would think that in the reality of the show, that relationship would have continued to have flourished.

It did, the Soviets gave them the docking computer which was a newer model, and the capsule was a Soyuz clone.

But clearly NK didn't tell the Soviets their plans.

Or the Commander wasn't told by control, which is easily believable.

Apart from nk being a very secretive regime, they might have been hoping to get to Mars first or at least find and lay claim to water or any other resources.

Or they didn't know if their <insert Korean for spaceman here> would survive the trip and didn't want to admit the loss.

Obviously a one way trip given the capsule but I'm surprised he's able to stand. Sojourner may not have had gravity but they could move about, keep clean and take steps to minimize the loss of bone density.

The north korean would been little more than the proverbial spam in a can.

Yeah, I imagine he may not being to go home, not without a lot of gravity exercise.

His comm array was probably damaged in the crash.

For the record, the character is only billed as "Speaker of the House".
