Spoilers The Acolyte

I’m reading Shadow of the Sith currently and I’m wondering if the lead of this new show is going to be Darth Noctyss. If so then this could be the Sith Lord that trains Plagueius.
Not impossible, but I doubt it, honestly.
Historically, unless it's explicitly tie-in media; the publishing side giving a certain character a spotlight usually means the opposite is going to happen in live action or animation. Conversely, with a few notable exceptions; characters that are being ere marked for future projects tend to get ring-fenced.

Some of this is practical; different mediums work at different paces after all and it's a logistical challenge to coordinate this stuff as it is. In the case of The Acolyte, it seems to still be fairly early in pre-production so I doubt they have enough locked down for what's currently being published to meaningfully reference (keeping in mind in print media, the manuscripts are usually done a year before it goes on sale.)

So no more Tenebrous?
Ugh. If there's one thing I hate about the Star Wars EU, it's the lame Sith names.

Give George Lucas crap about his writing, but he could come up with some damn badass Sith names: Sidious, Maul, Tyranus, Plagueis, Vader.

The EU leaves a lot to be desired. "You shall be known as Darth..... uh...." *sees a pallet of boxes* "...Crate.... err, I mean, Krayt. Yeah. Badass you will become."

Hopefully Acolyte consults with Lucas to come up with some cool names. Hell, KoTOR had Darth Nihilus. That's pretty badass. Darth Malak, not so much... "Darth.... Terry."

The Force Unleashed's main character "Starkiller" was almost called Darth Icky, which was a (not joking) suggestion by Lucas. He also suggested Darth Insanius.

As for the EU, I think it had more good names then bad. Darth Revan, Bane, Nihilus, Sion, and Drayt were all good names, at least in my opinion.

Outside of Darths, the canon/Lucas approved Star Wars gave us really stupid names like Elan Sleazebaggano, Savage Opress, Droopy McCool and Figrin D'an, among others. Sure, Lucas might not have pitched those like he did Icky and Insanius, but having stupid names is something the EU and canon Star Wars have both been guolty of, and I'd honestly say that the canon stuff tends to be stupider, at least with more obscure characters.

I mean, he named himself after the Krayt dragons. He was from Tataooine and lived among the Sand People for a time.

Not sure how that's a stupid name, Krayt dragons were fearsome beasts.

Admittedly, I skipped i lot of the Star Wars EU (I opted instead for Trek novels) so I was unaware of Krayt dragons. I just imagined a cargo hold full of crates and that was how the name was decided

I never realized anybody thought Sidious was a dumb Sith name. When The Phantom Menace came out when I was 19 I thought it was badass. Possibly even better than the names Vader and Maul

I guess it all depends on whether one is willing to embrace how deliberately goofy and on-the-nose Star Wars can be. Probably the main reason I bounced off of much of the late era EU material. They tired to make Star Wars edgy and serious, and it just doesn't work.

If you watch the Mandalorian you'll see Krayt Dragon.

Sidious as a name never struck me as very interesting. Palpatine was lwas just "the Emperor" so adding on his Sith name just was odd.

Once Lucas settled on the 'Rule of Two' idea, and decided that the first movie's heavy was going to be Darth Maul, then it was kinda necessary for Palpatine to have a Sith name too. And Sith names as a thing were also kinda necessary to account for where the name "Darth Vader" even came from.

Also keep in mind that the prequels are supposed to play without the audience knowing that the kinda nice Senator Palpatine guy and shadey McHologramface Lord Sidious are the same person. Yes it's obvious to long time fans, but it wasn't made for long time fans, it was made for 8-12 year olds, just like the originals were.

Fair enough. I just found the name "Sidious" dumb at the time. But, I was 14 so what did I know? ;)

True enough but then the "Sneak Preview" figures had it perfectly revealed so not sure how play that would have.

"Sidious" makes about as much sense as "Vader" TBH. Like I said, Star Wars has a very deliberate goofy streak that goes all the way back to it's Flash Gordon roots.

I can't speak to the figures, but from memory, most of the press and tie-in media I saw at the time seemed to deliberately not connected the two personas together. I even recall in interviews Lucas & McDiarmid played it coy all through to RotS. It's not like it was a massively closely held secret or anything, but they seemed to want to preserve the reveal for the kids, new audience members, and old audience members that aren't mega-fans who even knew the name "Palpatine" in the first place.

I think the name Sidious comes from/refers to the English word insidious.

I’m looking forward to a Hi-Rep era show. Did they have Star Destroyers back then?

I can't speak to other's experience but here is what I recall for the most part: One, figures like this where at a huge variety of stores, and did little to hide the connections between characters seen in the OT and what was upcoming with Episode 1. If they were trying to preserve the reveal then it was sporadic, at best. Now, I will say that some didn't completely buy in to a one to one, including that Palpatine was a clone and Sidious would kill him.

Maybe toys are not the biggest giveaway but for me and my friends, who were buying everything we could Episode 1 toy related, it wasn't a huge shock.

Mileage will vary.

Yeah, I get that. I just think it's a dumb name. It can make sense all the live long day within the context of the world but my knee-jerk reaction is still "Meh."

The Force Net forums still has threads dating back to the late 1999s with people speculating about the prequels, and there were still people debating up to ROTS if Palpatine and Sidious were the same person.

One theory I saw was that Palpatine was a clone of Sidious to be used as a public face as he was too busy doing Sith stuff lol

I always wondered if they'd go the clone route with Sidious/Palpatine during the prequels too. Every time we see Palps (I REFUSE to call him "Sheev," that's another EU name I hate :) ) he's surrounded by dignitaries, high ranking members of the Jedi Council and bodyguards. What kind of excuses did he give when he had to run off and be evil, like say, when meeting Dooku after the Battle of Geonosis or General Grievous after the Battle of Coruscant?

"Excuse me, Master Jedi, but my bowels seem to have taken a turn... to the DARK SIDE."

He occasionally met with a few High Council members, probably for less than an hour at a time. I'd hardly call that "surrounded at all times". As a rule politicians are busy people, so even as a mere Senator he'd hardly be bereft of excuses for having to go take a call, or have a meeting, or see to some business. It's the perfect camouflage for a sneaky evil schemer really, since politicians basically are sneaky evil schemers by design.
Also remember that his inner circle knew exactly what he was, were likely there because he helped advance them, and presumably knew the consequences of betrayal. So it's not like he'd need an excuse for them, he'd just tell them to bugger off and cover for him if need be.

As for his guards, in hindsight I suppose one good explanation for their mute loyalty could be that they're actually cultists raised on Exegol, given false documents and identities.

Lucas is on record as hating having to name things (presumably about as much as he hates having to write) so I think "meh" was pretty much his thought process on the matter too.
