I didn't get that impression as all as he ordered the Grand Clerics not to certify the election, which I assume is the equivalent of Congress in this case.

    Which he did because:
    -The votes weren't completely tabulated.
-There is historic precedent for doing so.
So, no there is no indication he was trying to subvert democracy, nor is there any reason to believe he would abide by the results under proper circumstances.

Does anyone feel like the new episodes are too long and have pacing issues?

    Yes, it's a common complaint.

Seth really wants to go serious sci-fi and I don't think that's his strength.

I'm honestly wondering, given comments Seth has made about how some scenes from all of the episodes were filmed before COVID shut down production, but nothing was yet done, if he decided after such a big hiatus to add additional stuff to every single episode. It would explain the pacing issues.

Amazing episode. Great acting, great story, great directing.
I would rate it 9 out of 10 if there was a poll.

Ugh, a Mochlun episode. They’re basically the Meg episodes of Orville. :)
That kid sure grew up quickly. I don’t think they addressed that.

It's interesting how the original episode felt quaint when it aired, like it was a play on the TNG episode, but given recent events in the US, both this episode seems frighteningly prescient and perhaps too close to reality.
(It's also interesting how the 'scene' from last week may have felt extraneous at the time, but is probably the most timely the show has been when it comes to being allegory).

But yeah, I like Bortus but the faux-Klingons are kind of very one note. Bortus yells at everyone, regardless of whatever emotion he is trying to convey - and actually comes off as an asshole when he constantly shouts down his partner, and I have no idea if that's intended or not.

I want to like this episode because of what it represents and I'm actually glad that they decided to deal with the consequences of the original episode and had a somewhat bittersweet ending to the arc, considering The Outcast basically ended bleakly with the complete destruction of the character's gender identity. But whether it's the length or the general writing of the episode, I thought it was good when it possible could have been great.

It was also funny to see Alara again. I don't know if the original shot was composed that way and it's just old footage, or if they threw her in as a cameo, but it's like whenever Tasha Yar or Sela shows up I guess.

They are leaving the the viewers with something to think about, allowing them to decide for themselves what's right and what's wrong and everything inbetween. Thought provoking scenes like this have sadly been absent from nuTrek, which is just trying to hit the audience over the head with their messages.

I was feeling really depressed during the first half of the episode, but it really did get going in the second half. It actually ended up being a really great episode and probably the best episode of the season. I really hope we go back to the Sanctuary later in the season and see Haveena again. It seems like Topa would love to hang out with other Moclans who look like her.

I’ve enjoyed all the episodes this season but I think they’re all too long by 10-15 minutes.

I’m glad Klyden left. Such a one note character. Moclans seem so angry all the time and that gets annoying.

I've been watching the latest season of The Orville as well, and A Tale of Two Topa's made me want to come and comment here. I've always loved the Moclan episodes, with things kicking up a gear in season two with female Moclans and Topa's surgery.

Today's episode was like a classic Star Trek episode, with the discussion over Topa's rights about wanting to be a female and having to go against one of her fathers so that she could be the gender that makes her feel normal. Also the instrumental playing You'll Never Walk Alone when Topa walked onto the bridge got to me because I'm a Liverpool FC fan. :D

I'd say that this was the first time the extra runtime felt justified. It just flew by.

This was the best episode of the season so far, IMO.
I was crying when Kelly started using "she" the moment Topa said she was female.
