TOS once had an entire episode where the White Rabbit, Alice, World War II fighter planes and a Medieval knight each appeared on a sophisticated planet that was an amusement park that scanned your mind to recreate images. And this plot is suddenly too silly?

What was that? I need to rewatch it again before rating it.

Have you never watched Star Trek before? There are dozens of episodes across the previous series that are all similiar to this one in some way.

Not my favorite TOS episode either. Part of it might be where each person draws the line between humor and too silly. I like humor in ST, but not overly silly. YMMV of course.

Also, I have issues with a parent turning over their child to an unknown alien who, at best, doesn't understand humans and other humanoids and is callous towards their safety.

Imagine if a stranger showed up at your door, accidently endangers you somehow, and then you're like, well, he seems nice and the daughter likes him because he performed a magic trick! Here's our daughter. Keep her!

    That's basically what M'Benga did.

I think it’s just an Easter Egg. No need to take it more seriously than that.

Well you see that episode has silly things that didn't make sense until the end. Whereas this episode is has silly things that didn't make sense until the end...

...I trust you can see the difference.

    This weeks cosplay SNW

Not only too early for this type of show, but when you only have 10 episodes in a season to waste it on an episode like this is criminal. This Star Trek has too much farce, too much whimsy, and snark. The whole daughter storyline was ludicrous. Why hide her in a transporter at all ? Why not suspended animation? Why not do so in a medical faculty where you can devote your time in doing so without jeopardizing your crew mates? When he starts brewing up his concoction he doesn’t even wear protection? When he goes up to the bridge to treat a wounded Ortega he doesn’t even bring a medkit. This is one badly written character. Modern trek always seem to solve all its issues with fantasy and magic. Past shows relied on some science. I’ve like the season more or less so far but this was a misstep as was the previous episode

I had some issues with this ep but i still like it. Very much in the vein of TOS.

I watched it again. Things I liked:
    1. Costumes!
    2. Set design.
    3. Story/concept
    4. Chrissy Chong and puppy Runa as matching princesses.

    Things that moved me:
    1. The mercury stone that was actually Rukiya. The speech about the King's happiness and sacrifice - ouch, my heart.
    2. Parental heartstrings plucked mercilessly.
    4. M'Benga's reaction to the name Deborah and how much his girl looked like her mother.

    Things that made me wince:
    1. Much of it felt like to me like a high school (or middle school) production. I can't explain why exactly. But I've seen my fair share of middle school Hamlet's and high school "Sense and Sensibilities" and this felt like those.

Apparently, you're missing the issues that some of us have with it. It's not just the silly things, but include the following:
    • Huge plot holes (e.g., use a phaser to stun everyone).
    • Sketchy decision regarding his daughter.
    • It's a bit dubious aiming for a dramatic ending like that in an episode dominated by silliness.
It's alright if you enjoyed it. I'm happy for you. But it's also fine for those of us to have issues with it. SNW is a great show. But for me this one was not downright bad but it was somewhat disappointing.

As always with these things, YMMV.

Many SF authors also write fantasy.

And The Princess Bride is absolutely NOTHING like anything else that William Goldman wrote.

    Sarcasm is hard.

I have no issues if people like it or don't like SNW is striding the rode of average right now for me. It's not disappointing; it's not great. It's just cruising there.

Yup. Science like ESP, doing the time warp, as well as the incredibly ability of aliens being able to breed with humans with no issue whatsoever.

    SCIENCE!

No, I got your point. But you were missing some understanding of the criticisms or so it seemed.

I do like SNW quite a bit. Strongest start for a ST series since TOS. But the past two have been a bit of a let down IMO.

No, I was making a sarcastic quip about two silly episodes. See also, jokes, humor, and haha.

This episode was ridiculous with the outfits, but M'Benga 's was OK. So, average.

We agree then--or close to it! I actually didn't realize that. M'Benga was the highlight.
