Once again, the character is has not been stated to be trans. Also, I've always considered trans and nonbinary to be mutually exclusive terms. If someone can explain how you can be nonbinary if you've switched from one binary to the other I'd like to hear it.

I'll admit it. I never used those words in that way my whole life. This is a brand new use. I wish someone would come up with something different. It doesn't sound right and it's a bit confusing and difficult to use it in a sentence correctly and not slip up the they or them.

this is very true. But languages evolve and it’s normal to stumble when using something different than what we’re used to. If one is well-intentioned I don’t think their mistakes will be held against them.

Learning new things is normal. We always learn new things, so I don't see why they/them for individuals should be any different. I've always used they/them if I didn't know anything about someone, to use it for an individual whom I am acquainted with is no issue at all.

You were a head of the curve then. I've never heard of using that for gender until very recently maybe just the last year or so. Back in he olden days we used names and how a person looked to figure out gender. Not a hundred percent effect but mostly so. Now I always worry about the people that don't even identify as a gender. I don't want to get fired or taken to court for a mistake. I fear that's were this could go one-day.

I don’t think you should have any fear of this realistically happening: we’re still asking about people and they know that people can make mistakes. If you are not super-obnoxious in using the pronoun you decided instead of the one they chose I doubt you’ll ever face anything more than a correction.

Trans = Your gender does not equal your sex
Non-Binary = Your gender is neither exclusively male or female.

So for example if your sex if male and your gender is non-binary then you are trans and non-binary.

Now, in practice things are obviously not always as clear-cut. Personally, I know both non-binary people who considered themselves trans and those who don't.
