If Sybok is supposed to be a standin for today's real life religious fanatics, then I don't think he'd be anywhere near a non-binary person like Capt. Angel much less be in a relationship with them. In which case I think Trek is missing the opportunity to showcase that religion is often used as a cover for bigotry.
I have to hard disagree with this. First, St:V Sybok almost presented himself as almost a Messiah/Prophet type. There is no reason why a Vulcan who champions the religion of you-do-you because emotions are AWESOME wouldn't also be into gender freedoms as well.
Further though, I think that while some people do politicize religion or use religion as their own personal battering ram, it is a gross overgeneralization to assume that religion is simply a cover for bogots/bigotry. Religion has given us inquisitions, but religion has also given us hospitals, libraries, and universities. Monks spent lifetimes copying books both holy and otherwise. I just went to a pride parade and watched a number of Christian groups marching in it. It's just not nearly as dramatic, so it doesn't make the news. I would argue that believers are as diverse as any other group. Who Watches the Watchers wouldn't be as interesting if the Mintakan's saw "The Picard" and spontaneously built a hospital though.

Regarding this episode, I loved the "talk them into mutiny" moment. Sure, it's ridiculously unrealistic, but it was a super fun and super Star Trek moment.
I also loved that Sybok was in the episode. Based upon the build-up within the episode, I thought it might be him, but you never know given the ownership/rights issues that come up (which is why I *believe* Antonia wasn't Carol Marcus in Generations).... Solid 9 here.

Indeed. I understand that religion has been abused and misused and used as justification for atrocities in history and currently. But, as a religious person, who works alongside other religious people to further community goals and support and understanding for multiple people I find the broad strokes of "religion as a coverage for bigotries" to be misinformed, at best.

But, the people I watch helping out in the community don't make for good headlines.

So anyone like or dislike the Pike pirate impersonation moment. I thought it was a very tos like moment and funny. It was a horrible impersonation though but it showed that he has a sense of humor especially once a mission is over with and no one hurt or killed.

Does indifferent count?

I liked Number One's comment of "Please stop." That made me laugh.

I will not refer to a single individual as "them", even if said individual had multiple personality disorder.

That didn’t really register with me. I was trying to figure out whether the earring meant the character was supposed to be Bajoran and whether Angel had the Bajoran nose crinkles. I operated under the assumption that the character is an alien who is supposed to be female since Sybok/Xavierus is Angel’s husband and partner in crime. The crew appears to be fairly motley, with an assortment of alien species and hybrids. One of the green skinned crew had pointed ears — an Orion-Vulcan hybrid?

So what? Don't let it bother you that there's "too many" LGBTQ+ people around in a FICTIONAL show. It's a little too close to an Archie Bunker level of "there's too many of "them" around.

Its unrealistic representation wise per the population numbers. Its not accurate at all.

I agree with what you said but being an American I am rather concerned with the increasing takeover of our government by religious groups. I won't deny religions do a lot of good things but I think Sybok would be the perfect vehicle for Trek to address the bad things that they're doing right now. I mean, this is the same show that didn't shy away from the political parallels in the series premiere.

Furthermore Sybok being bigoted wouldn't contradict Sybok's portayal in ST5. A lot of religious speakers claim to be open and welcoming but in reality aren't. For example, the stories about Christian disabled motivational speaker Nick Vujicic who advocates openness for disabled people like himself but allegedly disowned his gay employee for coming out (I'm not confirming the authenticity of the allegation but it is there and he hasn't denied it).

I wonder if the creators of this episode read the 80s Star Wars comics with the Tofs.

I mean, Sybok is already a strike against religion but he's a strike against hippie religious cult leaders like the kind TOS dealt with and not organized hierarchical nationalist religions like, say, Bajor.

The parody of them is Kai Winn.

Sybok=Gullible and misguided as well as delusional but well meaning.

Kai Winn=Hypocritical, bigoted, and controlling.

It's a fictional TV series, it doesn't need to be accurate.

Also, shockingly, it's possible for groups of people to not reflect strict demographics.
