My fellow delivery driver took Monday off because he and his girlfriend attended a dog show over the weekend. He came back to work Tuesday not feeling well, so was sent home after lunch. He called Wednesday to say he had Covid. Then Thursday, my direct supervisor called in to say he had Covid as well. Yesterday, we had to send a third person home because he wasn't feeling well, so that's a third possible case. I've been wearing my mask, so I'm hopeful I won't catch it, but it would suck going into a long overdue vacation that I had planned for next week if I got sick and had to cancel my travel plans to visit my Mom and my girlfriend. I've been taking a home test every morning, so far so good.

With any luck, you'll dodge it. Howdy from Kirkland, by the way!

are you vaccinated, @DarrenTR1970 ? I managed to escape the virus so far, in spite of almost all my coworkers getting infected, and blame this both on having 3 vaccinations and on keeping strictly to the hygiene rules.

What I find deeply disturbing is that people often neglect to take the most basic precautions. Like the grocery shop worker with inch long fingernails (where there's room for dirt, there's room for a virus), or the doctor (!) with a long mane hanging around her faceshield (the instant she removes the shield, the contaminated hair will be in her face), or the Kindergarten staff member who gets into contact with infected children every day and upon coming home not even removes their contaminated garments (spreading the virus all over the place and their housemates).

Yup, and boosted as well. I pretty much wear my mask whenever I go out now. So, I should be protected.

yep. Same here. I'll get shot #4 on Friday.
A few weeks ago I showed live water insects at an exhibition and was the center of a cloud of some 30 children. None with mask nor vaccinated. They swarmed over me before I even got a chance to put my mask on. Nevertheless, I didn't catch a virus (I tested negative for 14 days in a row afterwards). A silent infection seems unlikely, considering my extremely strong immune reaction to the booster: I was down with fever for 4 days. I think it's safe to assume that the real thing would hit me a good deal harder.
So whatever the sceptics say, the vaccination does help. At least against the 3 virus strains currently active in Western Europe.

I still hope that the next mutation will render its victims speechless and target covidiots and politicians  And every single member of the weapons lobby!

A recent study shows that while vaccination significantly reduces the risk of hospitalization or death, it does not significantly reduce the risk of getting long COVID if you do get a breakthrough infection. (Although it does reduce the risk of long COVID overall, by reducing your risk of infection.)

    https://www.popsci.com/science/breakthrough-infections-long-covid/

(Note that the data is from before booster shots were widely available, and before Omicron became the dominant strain.)

Just reinforces my intention to stay masked in public spaces, even when it may not be explicitly required.

me too - especially as i most likely got it on public transport where at that time everybody was masked (i don't see any reason to better my chances to get it again)

Minor rant time: I grew up with medical professionals for parents. The basics of covering your sneeze and washing your hands have been drilled in to me since I was 5. Cleanliness was emphasized greatly. So, it gets under my skin (no pun intended) when people throw a fit over masks but don't follow basic hygiene rules that I learned 30 years ago and have been known for longer than that!

I got hand washing drilled in when I was six. A kid that was in one of the first grade classes had a kidney transplant and we were all made very aware of how dangerous it could be if Michael got sick. Consequently, my group washed our hands and stayed home if we were sick.

I don't remember being taught to wash my hands. We just did it.

I have a hand-washing station set up in my laundry room right by the door we use to enter the house. We walk in, drop our stuff, and wash our hands. It's not up for discussion. It's a family rule.

What grinds my gears further is my state's Department of Health uses the same talking points that they have had on health posters put up in all health facilities, daycares and the like, for 30 years. But, then they send it out like's a novel idea. No, no it's not. It aren't that hard!

Rant over. Sorry. I find it funny enough to laugh to keep from crying.

Both my mom and I have it. We were being careful, wearing masks and some idiot gave it to us.

Sorry to hear that, @Random_Spock , I hope you are both feeling better soon.

In pandemic news in Ontario today, we found out that they are going to let the mask requirements for public transit and most health-care settings expire this Saturday. I believe that at the provincial level, only the requirements for long-term care facilities and retirement homes will be extended past this weekend.
