Shouldn't that depend on how close you get to the singularity?

    Maybe?
That planet was well away from the singularity and still caused time drag in the movie.. Maybe because it's much bigger?
Maybe a mention of something like, this maneuver will cost us a week or something. Acknowledge it but make it trivial

Why would a slingshot around a black hole be any different than a slingshot around a star? It's the same mass just in a different area.

At the risk of being annoying, the only way you can suck is to create an area of lesser pressure, causing the higher pressure to push towards you. :)

They'd have to get VERY close to the event horizon in either case, something you don't want to do.

Depends on how close they got, the speed they were going, the size/mass of the singularly and how long they were around it. If they were close for only a few seconds then it would cost them hours maybe a couple days.

If a star is massive enough to collapse into a black-hole it's pretty f'ing massive, enough to distort time in large way.

GPS satellites have to account for gravitational time dilation because they're so far avove Earth's center of mass (as well as the speed they move) time moves measurably different so that if the satellites didn't adjust they'd be inaccurate in 2 minutes.

Would have added some science fun to the script.
Ortegas: so, how much time are we going to lose to the Pike Maneuver Mr Spock?
    Pike: Time?
Spock: Yes captain, we will be getting quite close, I'd estimate we may lose a week, depending how long and how close we get.
Pike: Well, always wanted to be a week younger. Make note if anyone's birthday we skip over.

I just realized how much that colony ship looks like a Conestoga, but with it's warp engines underneath.

Yeah but only by a few nanoseconds. It'd take a while before the difference would be noticeable. It's the same effect that compresses time when you go near the speed of light. But that requires you to go VERY near the speed of light to have any significant effect.

Similarily, if you want a significant time warping near a black hole, you're already dead.
Interstellar was interesting, but it wasn't very accurate in this respect.

I was thinking Andromeda. They come out of it and 300 years have past. :)

Just finished the episode. So far out of all the New live Trek on Paramount.....it is probably the most enjoyable episode I have seen so far.

Nanoseconds is noticeable for satellites, as I said, if they stopped adjusting they'd be inaccurate in 2 minutes. The point I was making was that if gravitational time dilation is that impactful around our little planet it would be more significant around a black hole.

Though, again, probably only by minutes. The black-hole in Interstellar was absurdly massive (it was called Gargantua, after all) the black-hole here seemed to be relatively small so the time dilation would be less impactful.

It'd probably be meaningully measurable in a length of time a person can comprehend but sill if it was small enough and they stayed high enough over it its could be a small length of time.

The time dilation moving at full impulse (half of c) time is only moving around 15% slower for the ship than those outside it who are relatively still. (Further, I think there's a technobabble explanation that says they have ways of getting out if time dilation when moving at meaningful fractions of c.)

Oh, absolutely. The thing with GPS sattelites is that they have to be VERY precise to give accurate locations, given the distances and time delays between signals.

But it's not the mass of the black hole that matters; it's how close you are to it. Incidently, more massive black holes are less dangerous because the event horizon is proportionally further out.

And more to the point, tense and exciting. It's been a while since we haven't had a cool episode like that.
