Just finished watching DS9 from first to last episode for 7th time. Amanzing. I can not believe that mankind could create this masterpiece. Greatest Trek show, one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Most of DS9 actors are still active. Story of DS9 is most like modern day shows, less like Gene's way of thinking 60s and TNG 80's/90's. Even today audience can accept DS9 stories.

So what's stopping Alex Kurtzman to make a DS9 legacy series, even mini-series of 10 one hour episodes could do fine.

I mean who really cares about non-canon quasi S31 TOS-era series?

It does seem to be looking like the abandoned child - TOS has had Disco 1-2 and SNW, TNG has Picard and VGR is kind of being followed up in Prodigy

I'm still smarting from the mistreatment of Sisko in the final ep, but other than that it was a pretty good wrap up.

Captain Worf of the IKS Bortas would be perfect for such a concept. I no longer have confidence that series will happen, based on how potential spinoffs featuring Rios as captain the Stargazer and Seven as a Fenris Ranger were handled in S2 of PIC, despite both series being requested by fans.

Best hope for a DS9 follow up are Bashir, the O’Brien’s and Quark appearing in Lower Decks at some point, as they all appeared on TNG.

I highly doubt it. DS9 was excellent, but that doesn't mean that it necessitates / calls for a follow-up. The show was a very well constructed end-to-end story when it concluded. There isn't anything series-worthy there to go back to.

I could see a Short Trek involving some legacy characters...or even bringing back a character for some future series (like Seven in PIC)...but I doubt very much you'll see an entire series devoted to resurrecting the plotlines from DS9 like PIC has done for TNG. It doesn't make any sense.

The original show was great the way it was. Sometimes "The End" is best left as "The End." See Also: "...All Good Things" and the TNG movies.

Exactly so. I get the longing for a good thing to continue, naturally, but this is one that I feel can be let rested.

As part of the DS9 doc, the original writer's room got back together and came up with an outline for a Season 8 premier which would pick up where the story left off.

It had a lot of ideas that I think people would detest (Bashir becomes the head of Section 31, Kira becomes Kai, etc.). It also seemed dramatically unnecessary.

I thought it was cool, if you're talking about the "What We Left Behind" 8th season scenario...but as you said...it's completely unnecessary given the way DS9 ended. It was such a well-done, contained story...I just don't see the need to expand on it, aside from the fanboy-in-me urge to see some characters again and such.

If they wanna keep the Trekkake coming, they'll probably do something more directly DS9 related sooner or later.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t get some kind of indirect follow-up. Obviously Worf will be on the next season of Picard, but aside from a couple of brief appearances on Discovery and Lower Decks, the Bajorans, Cardassians, Ferengi and Dominion have barely been touched in modern Trek.

I am leery about New Trek doing a legacy DS9 project. However, I do feel that Discovery is a spiritual successor, in a way, to DS9. And we have gotten some nods to DS9 throughout new Trek, which I usually find nice when I hear or see them. And I think Lower Decks would be the quickest and easiest way to bring DS9 characters back. Quark, Rom, and Morn all seem tailor made for a return on Lower Decks.

I would like to see a Captain Worf series, though I would rather see him as captain of the Enterprise-E or F. I would also be okay with seeing him as captain of the Defiant, albeit it a different class vessel. I just don't think a multiyear Klingon-centric series is going to sale to the masses. At best I see it as a miniseries.

Or, a Worf show on the Ent-E/Ent -F/Defiant is safe and predictable and would be the limited series. While a show set on a Klingon ship would fall in line with what producers had in mind for DIS S1 & PIC S1 to get fans out of their comfort zone and take risks to try something new. And like DIS S1 & PIC S1, result in multiple seasons.

Certainly, the Captain Worf on the Enterprise series could be limited or limiting. But the way I see it is that a Klingon-centric series, while being outside the Trek comfort zone as it were, also is testing the limits of widespread or even niche fan appeal. Even among Trek fandom I've seen some frustrations in the past about the Klingons getting too much focus at times. If I recall, I've seen even some griping about Worf being overexposed to, though my memory is faulty on that (perhaps in part because I've always really liked Worf). With streaming, I could see a Klingon-centric series working more than back in the day when you needed a lot more broader appeal to succeed on network television or in syndication. That being said, new Trek hasn't done a great job (in terms of being widely embraced) in depicting Klingons so far, so it's very questionable they could successfully build a whole series, one intended to be multiyear, that delves deeply into Klingon culture.

Also, with Strange New Worlds, another Starship Enterprise-based series, seemingly doing very well right now, there are a lot of people who like Trek within its comfort zone. Further, new Trek has not been shy about hitting the nostalgia button even as it also attempts, or claims, to be doing something new or fresh. The Starship Enterprise is a character in and of itself and as much part of the Trek mythos as Kirk, Spock, etc. TNG and to a lesser extent ENT, proved that all you need is a starship named Enterprise and immediately people get that it's Trek.

One of the big questions out there with Star Trek: Picard, for me, is where is the Enterprise? I can't imagine that the Big E (whether the Enterprise-E, F, or another letter) won't be in Picard's third season.

While Picard is a multiyear series, it was said from jump basically that it would be a limited series, so I don't put it in the same category as Discovery. It wasn't open ended like Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, or Strange New Worlds. These other series have to earn each new season in a way Picard doesn't.

I think there's more multiyear potential for a Worf series based on the Enterprise than one that relies a lot on enough people caring enough about Klingon culture and lore.

    Sadly, you're right. Stupid Enterprise.

Never before has there been a bigger argument to not do something that what was just written here.

I still think my idea of a series set during the TOS movie era starring Curzon Dax would be fantastic. Plus give us more Kor, Kang, and Koloth.

I think that’s solved if the premise of a Klingon show is based off of a quote by Ezri Dax:

“The Klingon Empire is dying. And I think it deserves to die.”

That’s a premise worth exploring in greater detail than the episode it originated in, that a paradigm shift is on the way where the Klingons won’t be a focus of Trek going forwards.

In any case, a Klingon show doesn’t work without Worf; Alexander is not a strong enough character to lead the show, K’Ehleyr is long dead, Kurn had his memory wiped, and I don’t think the audience will take to an unknown Klingon character if they actually are suffering from Klingon fatigue.

New Trek struggled to present the 23rd century well when DIS premiered. They finally got it right with SNW. The same thing can be said regarding how new Trek handled the 24th century after some fans took issue with the first season of PIC, that LD gets it right.

If given a chance, I’m sure new Trek could get the Klingons right.

There are also a lot of fans that are starting to realize what DIS S1 was trying to do, in taking chances to create a new experience. There’s clearly an audience for that in Trek too. And a Klingon show would not just target Trek fans. It would be targeting that Game of Thrones/Vikings/The Last Kingdom niche. Not everything in the new era of Trek has to cater to those that want traditional and safe Star Trek. New ideas can be experimented with too.

It been established by those same shows that Klingons are as much apart of Star Trek mythos as the Starship Enterprise is. And are one of the most mainstream alien species in all of Star Trek.

A Worf series could be seen as the final chapter of Worf’s story, like PIC is the final chapter of Picard’s story. And much like how Picard had TNG and the TNG films leading up to PIC, Worf has TNG & DS9 leading up to a Worf show.

Part of the issue with Worf being captain of the Enterprise is that it may still lead to Worf having to command a Klingon ship (the Bortas, the Rotarran, the Gorkon). Since I’m sure that there would be a conspiracy within Starfleet to push Worf out of the captain’s chair due to the event on Soukara in DS9, despite the obvious political brownie points of having Worf being captain of the Federation flagship.

I think any continuation of the Star Trek franchise in to the 25th century should be a legacy series, combining everything that has been shown in Star Trek from all series so far in to one amalgamation!

They could base it around one ship, the Enterprise of course as it is the Federation’s flagship, but it could visit places both old and new from the Star Trek universe that we know and love, without the production team being scared of reintroducing old friends and characters from the past. There could even be an arc where the Enterprise is based at Deep Space Nine. Legacy characters from any series could even be a part of the main crew or have recurring roles throughout each season. Aged characters can easily be explained in a legacy series. :bolian:
